Good value today on the San Diego Padres with Andrew Cashner on the mound against the Washington Nationals and Max Scherzer.

His Record is What?
This could be a legitimate question for both pitchers but more so for Cashner. He comes in with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP, unfortunately that has not led to wins as he stands at 1-6 so far this year.  Scherzer comes in with even better numbers with a 1.99 ERA and a WHIP just below 1.00, and he is 3-3.  Both these guys can be lights out and it seems the odds makers agree with that by making the total on this game pretty low at 6.5.  MLB betting odds makers have made Washington the favorite at about -130 with the Padres getting around +115. It is pretty apparent Scherzer is the better pitcher overall but the value today is with Cashner and the Padres. From 2012-2014 at home Cashner has been really tough with an ERA of 2.11, this year at home his ERA is 1.80.  In that same time frame Scherzer’s ERA sits at 3.49 on the road, but this year he has been pretty tough with a 1.30 ERA.  Still in the overall body of work I like Cashner at home on the plus money line against anyone.

Even at the Plate
There is not a lot of difference at the plate with these two teams. Most likely this game is going to be decided but a hit here or there with these two dominant pitchers and the pitcher friendly park in Petco. Going into yesterday’s game the stats were pretty even across the board for these two teams with the Nats ranking 5th in runs per game, the Padres 7th, the Nats ranking 10th in slugging % and the Padres ranking 12th, and the teams are tied in batting average ranking 13th at .256.

With the Nats handling the Padres yesterday I like San Diego to bounce back today with their ace on the mound and get a few key hits in key spots against Scherzer to pull out the win. Good value MLB pick on a good team and pitcher that pitches tough at home.

MLB Pick: Back the Padres on the plus money line.
