Early MLB Picks: Insane Slugfests To Take Place Friday

Thursday, June 2, 2016 6:39 PM GMT

Sports handicapper Ian Cameron provides a look at MLB Overnight Betting Lines for the games taking place on Friday, June 3.

Washington Nationals vs. Cincinnati Reds
Gio Gonzalez has suddenly crashed down after a strong start to the season for the Nationals. He has been belted around for 13 runs on 16 hits in his last two starts over 9.2 innings of work against St. Louis and the NY Mets and has surrendered 5 home runs in his last three starts over a span of 16 innings which could be a whole lot of trouble for the Nationals lefty here as he takes on Cincinnati in a very home run friendly setting like Great American Ballpark and it’s worth noting Gonzalez got hit for 4 runs on 7 hits in 5.1 innings in his lone start here last season and that game soared Over the total in an 8-5 final score.

On the flip side, Brandon Finnegan will counter in this battle of lefties for the Reds and he has had a lot of difficulty pitching at home this season coming into this outing with a 5.40 ERA allowing 19 runs on 31 hits and 7 home runs in 26.2 innings of work in this ballpark. Finnegan has not pitched beyond the 6th inning in 9 of his last 10 starts and that means the Reds league worst horrendous bullpen comes into play in the latter stages and could serve up some late inning runs to Washington in this game. The Over is 3-0 in Gio Gonzalez last three starts and 4-1 in Finnegan’s 5 home starts this season. That provides us with a combined 7-1 betting angle to bet this game Over the total between the Nationals and Reds on Friday night.

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles
Chris Tillman continues to pitch at a rock solid level for the Baltimore Orioles. I cashed a winning ticket with the Orioles in his most recent start against Cleveland that was just one of many good performances from him so far this season. Tillman has bounce back from a miserable season last year and has a 2.92 ERA overall and an even better 2.04 ERA in 7 home starts at Camden Yards in which Baltimore has gone a perfect 7-0. His strikeouts per 9 innings are up this season and his swinging strike rate has risen dramatically from 7.1% in 2015 to 10% this season. His is making better pitches and inducing a lot more swings and misses. Tillman has dominated the Yankees in 7 career starts against them here at Camden Yards allowing 3 runs or less in each outing.

That is bad news for a Yankees lineup that is slumping miserably right now as they’ve been held to 2 runs or less in four straight games scoring just 5 runs during that span. However, the Yankees starter in this game Nathan Eovaldi has the look of a ‘bet on’ hurler right now too. Eovaldi has always been able to throw hard and hit the high 90’s in the radar gun but he appears to finally harnessing his talents as he’s coming off three straight dominant outings allowing 2 runs in his last 18 innings of work against Arizona, Toronto and Tampa Bay with the Yankees winning each of his last five starts. He has shut down the Orioles in the past allowing 7 runs in 16.1 innings of work in three starts against Baltimore during his career. The Under is 4-1 in Eovaldi’s last 5 road starts and 6-1 in Tillman’s 7 starts this season at home. The Yankees as a team have gone 6-1 to the Under in their last 7 games during their current run scoring slump. All of which are trends worth riding in what should be a lower scoring affair.
