We did the splits yesterday after a 3-0 sweep on Wednesday. Let’s peruse the MLB odds that the sportsbooks are offering and try to sweep the board again on Friday’s installment of Swinger’s MLB picks.

MLB Season Record (6-3, +3.30 units)
The Blue Jays did not disappoint yesterday, slapping the Yankees with a 6-3 defeat and adding a unit to our bankroll. But then I advised a play on the Philadelphia Phillies who were +125 home dogs in MLB odds over the visiting Boston Red Sox. Alas, it was not to be as Boston departed the City of Brotherly Love with a 6-2 victory and a series win. Let’s get back on point today.

Nationals (1-2) vs. Phillies (1-2)
The Nats’ Gio Gonzalez is a good one to begin with and he ended his spring training in fine form, registering a 2.79 ERA to complement his 19 K’s in 19 1/3 innings. Neither team is hitting thus far early in the season. Therefore my initial knee-jerk reaction was to go low in this one.

But then I took a gander at Jerome Williams, the Phillies 33-year-old right-handed pitcher who will be doing the honors for the Phillies this evening. Williams has posted a 7.40 ERA in 20 2/3 innings this spring and has struggled mightily. He is the guy who could very well be slated for long relief or even designated for assignment if he doesn’t get better in a hurry. The Phillies are not strong offensively and a case could be made that they will find themselves in the cellar of the NL East at season’s end.

The Nationals are 1-2 dropping their opening season series with the Mets. The team has not hit but the season is too young to cast aspersions. I realize the Phillies have the luxury of playing their first six games of the season at home while Washington must fly into Philly after a series with the Mets. But it’s a short flight and the Nats should be licking their chops at the prospect of teeing off on a pitcher like Williams who seemed dazed and confused throughout the spring. Take the Nats with your MLB picks tonight.

Total – Royals (2 O – 1 U) vs. Angels (1 O – 2 U)
Pitching for the Angels tonight is veteran John Lackey who will be opposed by the Royals’ Hector Santiago. Both pitchers enjoyed a decent spring but generally speaking these are not top flight hurlers capable of flirting with a no-no in any given game. The Angels boast a potentially fierce lineup while the Royals bats are white hot.

The Royals are most certainly on an offensive tear with a .380 team batting average due to Alcides Escobar, Lorenzo Cain, Salvador Perez, and Alex Rios hitting the cover off the ball. On the other hand, the Angels have to be pleased with the early returns on star slugger Albert Pujols while their second baseman Johnny Giavotella is ripping it up early to the tune of a team leading .444 batting average.

I like the relatively low total that the offshores are offering in their MLB Odds in this one. Let’s look for plenty of offense and many calls to the bullpen as we get this one at what looks like a tantalizing total of 7 ½ (+105).

MLB Pick: Over 7 ½ (+105) at Pinnacle
