Our MLB handicapper, Mark Lathrop, has been blistering hot over the last few days and sticks to the West Coast for two plays in his backyard to keep things going. Read up as he tries to extend the winning streak.

The Seattle Mariners continue their weekend series with the Angels on Saturday night, after getting blanked on Friday night 5-0 by Garrett Richards. Two lefties will take the mound with Marco Gonzales for the Mariners and Tyler Skaggs for the Angels. The Mariners have beat up on left-handed pitching this year and have put up a nifty 6-3 SU record against them on the season. Their offense has been hot over the last 7 games as well, with a 6.3 runs per game average and .276 batting average. Skaggs has been borderline brilliant to start the season, except for one dud of a game against the Red Sox on April 18th where he gave up 6 runs. There is reason to believe he is due for negative regression from his current 3.02 FIP though, as 4 batters in the Seattle lineup (Cano, Seager, Segura, and Heredia) absolutely give him fits.

Mariners starter Marco Gonzales has an almost identical 3.00 FIP, better than Skaggs at the moment, and a career best 9.73 K/9 and 1.57 BB/9 rate. His BABIP is .390, indicating that he has had a bit of bad luck as well. He pitched twice against the Angels last year and was competitive with a 3.24 ERA, although he lost both matchups 5-6. What he’ll have going for him today is that the Angels don’t hit the changeup necessarily hard, and the home confines of Safeco will limit the damage. I grabbed the Mariners at +111 on the overnight moneyline as one of my Saturday MLB Picks.

Baltimore’s terrible offense gets to face Trevor Cahill, who they have bad splits against in limited action. Expected lineup components Chris Davis, Pedro Alvarez, Mark Trumbo, and Adam Jones bat under .188 against Cahill in 10 at bats or more. He’s pitched well this season, with a 3.34 FIP and an improved 2.50 BB/9 rate. Batted ball profiles also tell a good story for Cahill this year, with a line drive rate sitting at just 11.6%. Line drives equal runs, as we know.

Baltimore counters with Keven Gousman, who has been hot over his last three starts with a 2.29 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. He also has good numbers against the Oakland lineup components. Gausman had one bad start this season, a 6-run dud against the Twins to start the season. Since then he has been very steady though while allowing 3 runs or less in each start. The one concern for him has been home runs, and he might even give up a few today against Oakland, but an average start from Gausman combined with Cahill dominating the Orioles once more should be enough to get this game Under the 8.5 total currently listed at 5Dimes.
