Tampa Bay is last in their division but has won seven of their last 10 games while the Seattle Mariners who are second in the West have done the exact opposite. Can the Rays continue to stay hot?

Seattle Mariners vs. Tampa Bay Rays
MLB odds have made the Tampa Bay Rays a -113 favorite like at Pinnacle. With a very good home pitcher on the mound in Jake Odorizzi I will back the Rays today to handle business at home for my MLB pick. Seattle has the better hitting statistics and better bullpen but I like Odorizzi to be the difference.

Seattle Mariners
Taijuan Walker takes the mound for Seattle and comes in with a 3.48 ERA and 1.14 whip with the Mariners hitting .260 as a team. Walker is coming off his best performance of the year allowing zero runs off of three hits in eight innings against Cleveland.  However, in his short career he has been less than stellar on the road which holds true this season as well with his 5.00 ERA when he travels with batters hitting .264 against him. Despite his latest performance he has been susceptible to the long ball already allowing six in his four road starts this season which could be problematic against a Rays team that can go deep.

At the plate the Mariners have been steady this season ranking 11th in average, fourth in runs per game at an even five per, and sixth in OPS.  There bullpen has also been steady with a 3.13 ERA with batters hitting just .214 against them. All that being said though they have been struggling lately to get runs averaging just 3.40 runs per game their last 10 and in the seven losses averaging under 3.00. I expect this trend to continue today.

Tampa Bay Rays
Jake Odorizzi gets the start for Tampa Bay and comes in with a 3.47 ERA and 1.16 whip. He has had a couple semi-rough starts in a row allowing five earned runs in his last 11 innings off of 10 hits. However, those last two games were on the road and at home this year he has been tough with a 2.52 ERA and batters hitting just .195 against him. As well, he has not really been roughed up this season with only two “bad’ outings where he allowed five runs twice, once versus Oakland and once versus the Red Sox.

He is in a good spot to come in and dominate today getting back home after getting two starts in a row at home. The last time he was in this type of situation he threw a one hitter against the Yankees. The Rays should have success at the plate today against a pitcher in Walker that has a tendency to give up home runs. Although their overall batting average is not great the Rays rank third in home runs per game, eighth in total bases and 11th in OPS.
