The Los Angeles Dodgers (68-52) pitching staff is filled with superstars, but luckily tonight for a struggling Atlanta Braves (60-58) team, they see the name Dan Haren on the starting lineup. Should we make the Braves our betting pick for Tuesday in this matchup?

First pitch is set for 7:10 pm ET at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia. This game can be seen on MLB TV.

Despite the Braves poor play as of late, 5Dimes Sportsbook has the Braves as a -121 betting favorite over the hard-hitting Dodgers with the betting total listed at 8 runs.

What Were Odds Makers Thinking???
Usually an inferior team is the betting favorite in the game because they have an advantage in starting pitching along with being the home team. Atlanta certainly doesn’t have any advantage as Mike Minor (4-7, 5.42) has had an awful season.

These are some nasty numbers; at home this season, Minor has allowed 30 runs and 70 hits in just 49 1/3 innings. While Dan Haren (9-9, 4.57) is nothing to write home about, he’s coming off of a nice start in which he allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 7 1/3 innings in a win over a good Los Angeles Angels team. I never thought that I would say this, but “advantage Haren”.

A Weak National East Division
Surprisingly, the Braves went on a very long losing streak that knocked them out of the top spot in the NL East, but the East is so bad that Atlanta is still in 2nd place and only 4 games behind the Washington Nationals with no other teams in the division to worry about.

Atlanta is coming off of a 6-2 loss to the Dodgers in a game where they had the edge in pitching with Julio Teheran. There’s obviously a sense of urgency for the Atlanta offense to take advantage of a very inconsistent Dan Haren.

When I think of the Braves lineup, the word “stable” comes to mind. There are no Giancarlo Stantons on this team, but Freddie Freeman (16 HR, 64 RBI, .290 BA) and Justin Upton (21 HR, 68 RBI, .279 BA) have a great upside with their youth, fine defensive play, and ability to draw a walk, and get on base. This could be a good spot for this solid 1-2 punch in the Braves lineup.

Lots Of Pressure
You have Magic Johnson tweeting and rooting them on and broadcaster Vin Scully won’t live forever after his 66 years in the booth. Los Angeles is looking to win the World Series now.

They certainly have a deep pitching rotation led by the great Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke, but unfortunately for them, Dan Haren gets the start tonight. This is a fairly even matchup as both teams have the punch in their offense to prevail.

“Gonzo”
After a poor start to the 2014 MLB season, Adrian Gonzalez is really starting to tear the cover off of the baseball and at the right time. Gonzalez’s split stats look fantastic. He’s hitting .389 against the Braves in 18 at-at bats with 3 doubles and 4 runs batted in. Gonzalez is also hitting an eye-popping .407 with 2 HR and 8 RBI this past week. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gonzalez was a factor in this game.

Outcome
This is a tough matchup and both teams need this game. The Dodgers are simply the better team at this point and Mike Minor is an easy target. Look for L.A. to win as the underdog on this steamy Tuesday night.
