It’s that time again. After two hard-fought, wild series on a back-to-back weekend in April, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres are ready to play again in a three-game midweek set in San Diego. Both teams are chasing the San Francisco Giants in the NL West and are hoping to make their move.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Diego Padres
Monday, June 21, 2021 – 10:10 PM EDT at Petco Park
After a two-month break, it’s that time again. The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres gave us two wild, hard-fought, emotional series on back-to-back weekends in April. Now, the two National League West powers are ready to meet again for a three-game midweek set that starts at Petco Park on Monday night.
Both teams are still looking up at the San Francisco Giants, but they are showing signs of momentum on betting sites after sweeping weekend series heading into the showdown in San Diego. The Padres and Dodgers still have nine head-to-head games remaining after this week’s series, but it should be a playoff atmosphere as both teams battle to get into position to overtake the Giants.
Hot and Dodgered
It’s the official start of summer, and the world champions have heated up on top sportsbooks accordingly. The Dodgers swept the lowly Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend and have won six of seven and 10 of 12.
The Dodgers are hopeful that Cody Bellinger, sent back to the injured list after a brief return to the lineup, will be able to be activated for two of the games against the Padres, although he won’t be eligible to return for Monday’s opener.
Los Angeles scored nine runs each in back-to-back games against Arizona and have plated five or more seven times in the last 12 games. The Diamondbacks scored eight in Sunday’s loss snapping a string of six straight games and 10 of 11 where the Dodgers allowed three runs or fewer.
The Dodgers have lined up their rotation to give the Padres their best on the mound for the three games. They open with lefthander Julio Urias, who has the second-most wins in the league at 9-2, 3.54. He has a 2.08 ERA in three starts and five relief appearances against the Padres in his career, although he hasn’t faced them this season.
Finding Their Footing
After a rough start to the month of June, the Padres appear to have recovered. San Diego swept a four-game home series against the Cincinnati Reds before welcoming the Dodgers to Petco. The wins snapped a slump that included seven losses in eight games, nine in their last 11 and 13 in the last 17. The prolonged cold stretch saw San Diego tumble from a game and a half lead in the West to as many as six games back, in third place. The Padres enter play Monday five back and will not be able to catch the Dodgers (a game and a half out of first) even with a sweep, although that would certainly tighten things up in the division.
The Padres got a scare on Saturday when star Fernando Tatis Jr. aggravated the injury to his shoulder that has already sent him to the injured list this season. The shortstop re-injured himself diving for a ground ball. Tatis was slow to get up and left the game. He was held out of Sunday’s game and is officially day-to-day. Manager Jayce Tingler was optimistic. “We feel like we’re in a fairly decent position,” he said. “The trainers think it’s nowhere near where it’s been earlier on in the year.”
For your MLB odds, the Padres will send Yu Darvish to the mound to start the series. The right-hander is 6-2, 2.57 this year. He’s struck out 97 batters in 84 innings while allowing just 59 hits. San Diego has lost Darvish’s last two starts after winning 11 of his first 12 this season.
After several false alarms throughout the season’s first two and a half months, it appears it’s now safe to say that the Dodgers have found their stride. The team is rolling on offense and on the mound and is ready to welcome back their MVP. The Padres, meanwhile, are fighting to remain in the mix in the ultra-tough NL West. Look for the Dodgers to take the first game of the series.
