A spot starter gets the call in Arizona for the Diamondbacks vs. the White Sox, and our MLB handicapper, Mark Lathrop, likes the prospects of taking advantage of the situation by playing a first 5 innings line.

Chicago White Sox At Arizona Diamondbacks

With Taijuan Walker hitting the disabled list, the Arizona Diamondbacks are being forced to turn to their bullpen for a starting arm on Wednesday afternoon, and situational reliever Randall Delgado is getting the call. He will go up against lefty Jose Quintana of the White Sox. The hot Diamondbacks are still favored in this game even with a spot starter on the mound, though, sitting at -112 on the moneyline at 5Dimes. The total is high and climbing, posted as high as 10 runs at Heritage as of Tuesday evening.

Randall Delgado is coming off of a three-inning performance five days ago in which he faced 12 batters at San Diego. It was tied for his longest outing on the year, as he has gone 3 innings four times now. He gave up one earned run his last time out, but what is important to note is that Delgado has not seen a lineup twice through the order. That is a variable I am looking forward to see play out, and I believe that the White Sox will be able to take advantage of it. Delgado is also allowing a 23.3% line-drive rate against right handers, so there is something to take advantage of there.

The White Sox will counter with Jose Quintana, who has been very good on the season. He’s coming off of an eight-inning outing against a depleted Seattle Mariners lineup in which he gave up just one run and put up a 7/1 K/BB ratio. It was a vast improvement over his previous two outings and how he started the season, as Quintana has allowed 3 or more runs in 5 of his 9 starts. As I am looking at Delgado to falter in his second time through the lineup it is only fair to look at Quintana in the same light. In this instance, it is Quintana who struggles the first time through a lineup posting a 5.21 ERA.

Taking the 'over' straight up in this situation is less than ideal, as both bullpens have performed rather well compared to the rest of the league. The White Sox bullpen is carrying a 2.62 ERA overall, while the Diamondbacks' bullpen is putting up a very respectable 3.61 ERA. But Arizona rakes at home to the tune of 6 runs per game and a .295 average, so taking the 'under' is also an uncomfortable proposition. In this case I will turn to a first five-inning line for the value with a spot starter on the mound.
