The playoffs looked like a lock for the Rockies a short while ago, but they’re struggling now. Join us for a preview and free MLB pick in their Saturday contest vs. Arizona.

Playing as well as any playoff contender in either league, the Arizona Diamondbacks take aim at increasing their cushion atop the NL Wild Card race when their series continues in Colorado against the Rockies. Saturday’s supper-time start in Denver features Patrick Corbin (12-11, 3.91) facing Jon Gray (6-3, 4.18), Colorado -110 chalk in the tightly-lined affair with 11½ for the total.

Diamondbacks vs. Rockies Odds & Preview

Arizona won its 8th-straight on Friday, breaking open a close contest with a 5-run seventh inning to post a 9-5 decision in a matchup Friday opener 5Dimes closed the Rockies on the exact same -110 money line. The victory gave the D-Backs a 7-6 lead in the season series, and 4-3 edge in the Mile High City contests. Totals have gone 3-4 O/U O/U at Coors Field this year after finishing 9-1 in Denver a season ago.

Rockies 5-0 In Gray’s Home Starts
Corbin closed a solid month of August with seven shutout innings against the Giants last Sunday, an 11-0 rout for Arizona and the New Yorker’s 4th-straight win with only one run allowed in that stretch (30.1 IP). He faced the Rockies in back-to-back assignments in late-April, early-May, posting zeroes in an eventual 2-0 Diamondbacks win in Phoenix and then getting pounded six days later on this diamond (4 IP, 8 ER). In seven career starts plus a relief appearance at Coors, Corbin is 2-2 with an 8.07 ERA.

Six shutout frames in Atlanta last Sunday completed Gray’s fine August that included three wins and a 2.30 ERA with just one homer allowed. The Rockies are 6-5 in his 11 starts since coming back from the DL in late-June, 4-0 in his home assignments, Gray pitching to a 4.14 ERA in that span. He was a +135 underdog on the MLB odds when he helped Colorado to a 6-3 win at Arizona, and has held Paul Goldschmidt hitless in six career encounters, whiffing the D-Back slugger three times.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
A veteran of 19 major league seasons, Paul Emmel will be behind the dish and brings a dead-level 10-10-2 O/U/P record to the tilt. The Michigan native is also even as far as home favorites go (6-6), with his June plate assignment on this field resulting in a loss for the Rockies and pushing an 11 run total.

Sunny skies, warm temps in the mid-to-upper 80s and a light NE breeze (in from right) is the forecast. I won’t screw with Arizona’s streak right now, meaning my free baseball pick is on the visitors.
