The Colorado Rockies are small favorites on the MLB odds Tuesday night when they put first place in the NL West on the line in a series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

MLB Season Record: 33-42 (-9.49)

There are great races in the AL East, AL Central and NL Central, where all five teams in each group still hang close from top to bottom. But the crème de la crème is in the NL West, where the top three threaten to hog 60% of the Senior Circuit playoffs, two of them going head-to-head Tuesday when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the Colorado Rockies.

Zack Greinke and German Marquez are slated to lift the lid on this series in an 8:40 PM (ET) start. The morning nickel line at 5Dimes has Colorado -112 with +107 the take-back on the D-Backs and 11 for the total. Both teams took Monday off and come into the start of this set just a game apart in the division, the Rockies in the lead with the Dodgers sandwiched between them and Arizona.

Greinke & Marquez Meeting For 2nd Time

Yeah, five runs scored with Greinke on the hill in his last start at Detroit, but they were all unearned and he should’ve been out of that one bad inning with just two coming plateward. The bottom line is the D-Backs are 10-4 with the veteran on the hill and bettors aren’t complaining about the 5.5 unit ROI against the MLB odds. Greinke split his two vs. the Rox this season, pitching well in both and winning the one in Denver, and has historically pitched very well in this park with seven quality efforts in eight starts.

Marquez was on the losing end of Greinke’s dubya at Coors, the young Venezuelan surrendering five earnies in his five innings with most of the damage the result of two swings of Paul Goldschmidt’s lumber. That outing came six days after he blanked the Diamondbacks over six frames in Phoenix.

Rivarly Info, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Arizona has the edge in the rivalry all-time and came out on top in each of the past two season series, but it’s Colorado with the upper hand so far this year. The Rockies took 2 of 3 in late May at Phoenix, then repeated that result when the clubs met about a week later in Denver. All three games at Coors fell short of totals which ran in the 11-11½ range to halt a string of eight straight ‘over’ winners between the clubs in the Mile High City.

There will be some clouds this evening after a sunny day, but no real chance of rain with game-time temps in the low 90s and a light 5-8 mile zephyr from the NE (in from right-center). Each side is riding a good run, the Rox winners of five straight and Diamondbacks on a 7-game run, so I won’t guess which one ends first with a free baseball pick on the ‘under.’
