Yesterday the Tigers took care of business in Houston picking up a much-needed win, and they will try to do the same today. Oddsmakers have come out making Detroit a small road underdog but is there any value in backing them?

Detroit Tigers

Justin Verlander takes the mound for Detroit and comes in with a 4.39 ERA and 1.34 whip well above his career 3.49 ERA and 1.19 whip. For the most part, he is having a really solid season but he has had a couple outings in which he has been less than stellar. One in particular that stands out was his third start of the year at Cleveland where he allowed nine earned runs off of 11 hits in four innings giving up three home runs. Outside of that though he has been one of the best pitchers in the league in my opinion and anytime you can grab him on the plus money line I think is just smart.

At the plate, Detroit put together some quality at-bats yesterday and are averaging 4.73 runs per game which ranked 12th in the major leagues. I like for them to score their share of runs today as I believe this is a more productive lineup than their current statistics show. They have a good propensity to get on base ranking sixth in the major leagues in walks and they have arguably the best right-handed hitter in baseball and Miguel Cabrera.

Houston Astros

Mike Fiers gets the start today for Houston and comes in with a 5.14 ERA and 1.43 whip, and like his counterpart has better career numbers with a 3.95 ERA and 1.27 whip. Still, all things being equal I believe he is the lesser pitcher in this spot and I think Detroit should have quite a few quality at-bats against him today. Houston has been very productive this season hitting .266 as a team and averaging 4.93 runs per game ranking them seventh and 10th in the league respectively. However, recently they have been a little less productive and outside of garnering six runs in a loss to the Indians they have only managed nine runs total in five of their last six games. For me, this really comes down to the value and anytime I see a team as good as Detroit with a good starter on the plus money line I will gladly take a shot in that scenario.

Detroit Tigers vs Houston Astros

Oddsmakers have come out making Detroit around the +111 underdog across the board. Although Houston might want to get a little bit of revenge, I think value wise backing Detroit for your MLB pick is a smart way to go.
