Today in interleague play I am backing over the total when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the Los Angeles Angels. Although these two teams have not been very productive at the plate recently I expect them to break out today at the plate.
Right now MLB odds makers have set this game at 7.5 for the total. That seems a little bit low to me and usually in this spot I like to go the opposite way, but I think odds makers are taking into account the fact that neither of these teams have done much at the plate in their last three games. At most sports books the line is -110, and that is pretty much across the board. Right now you get that line at Bookmaker and Sports Betting sports books.
Jeremy Hellickson comes in for the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 5.29 ERA and WHIP of 1.46. He simply has not had a good year so far this season. In his last three games he is given up nine runs in 15 innings pitched. He is not a big strikeout pitcher with 49 strikeouts in 66 innings. The main issue for him is he tends to give up a lot of home runs, in 12 games pitched he has already given up 10 home runs. Also, he doesn't go real deep into games, the most he is pitched this season is six innings which he did on five occasions. Garrett Richards takes the mound for the Los Angeles Angels and comes in with a 3.97 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. Like Hellickson, he is not a big strikeout pitcher with only 55 strikeouts in 65 innings pitched, not bad but not great either. He has had some trouble in his last three starts giving up 11 runs in only 14 innings. Two starts ago he could not get out of the first inning allowing six earned runs off a five hits against the New York Yankees. Also, he has given up five home runs in each of his last five appearances.
Both teams have struggled at the plate recently but I look for them to break out today. The Diamondbacks are ranked fourth in the league in runs scored per game. In fact the Diamondbacks are in the top 10 in most offensive categories in major league baseball. They rank eighth in on base percentage at .323 and they rank second in hits per game at 9.37, they should be able to do some damage against Richards today. The Angels have not been as productive this season as they should be in my opinion, they rank in the middle to lower half of the league in most offensive categories. But they have some good stats that show their heading in the right direction, they are ranked third in the league and runners left on base and they are ranked ninth in strikeouts per game. Albert Pujols and Mike Trout are both having good seasons with 18 home runs apiece. If not for the rest of the Angels look for those two to have some really good at-bats against Hellickson.
At 7.5 this number seems a bit low. Neither pitcher has been particularly solid this season and both teams can hit enough to get over this total, pretty good spot for both of these teams to do some damage today in Los Angeles, so take the over with your MLB picks.
