Angels and Blue Jays finish up their series today in Los Angeles and odds makers have set a decently high total. Looking at the numbers of the two pictures and the fact these two teams have swung the bats decently well, is there any value in backing the under?

Toronto Blue Jays

Francisco Liriano gets the start for Toronto and comes in with a 5.11 ERA and 1.54 whip over three starts this early-season. The main issue for his big numbers is the fact he had a really rough first game of the year but since then has bounced back nicely versus Boston and Baltimore allowing just two earned runs over 12 innings of work combined. At the plate Toronto has started to break out of their slump somewhat, however this is still a team that is hitting .220 as a team and averaging just 3.35 runs per game which ranks them 25th and 27th in the major leagues respectively. As well, they also rank 28th in OPS and have been striking out quite a bit averaging 9.29 per game ranking them 26th. The biggest issue coming into the season for Toronto was how their bullpen would fare and so far this season they have been shaky with a 4.40 ERA. Still, batters are hitting just .242 against them in 16 games so far so all might not be lost for the Toronto relief staff.

 Los Angeles Angels

Jesse Chavez gets the start today for Los Angeles and comes in with a 5.00 ERA and 1.39 whip over four appearances so far this season. Back on Friday he came in for one inning of relief work and got rocked by Toronto allowing four hits and three earned runs in just an inning of work. This fact gets my radar up a little bit in so much that this line is not overinflated. Chavez is much better than that one inning and in his three previous starts he allowed a combined seven earned runs over 14 innings, not great but he does have an opportunity today against a Toronto team that has less than stellar offensive statistics. At the plate Los Angeles has cooled off quite a bit from their hot start and currently are hitting just .239 as a team and averaging just 3.63 runs per game ranking them 16th and 24th respectively. As well, they rank just 23rd in the league in OPS. Like Toronto, their bullpen has not been lights out the batter so far are hitting just .231 against them in 19 appearances.

MLB Odds

Oddsmakers have set the total for this game at 8.5 runs and for my MLB pick, I will back under the total. Although these two teams have scored quite a bit in this series expect them to stay just below the number today.
