One of the hottest teams in baseball right now is the Houston Astros and today they travel to take on the struggling Kansas City Royals. Odds makers have of course made Houston a small road favorite considering their current streak, but is there any value in backing Kansas City?

Houston Astros

Mike Fiers will get the start today for Houston and comes in with a 4.96 ERA and 1.50 whip. For the most part, he has struggled this season and he has been giving up both runs and hits in bunches so I don’t expect for him to come in and be lights out today. Although he had a pretty good outing his last start versus Minnesota allowing just two earned runs off of five hits in six innings, prior to that he allowed three earned runs off of 10 hits in just four innings versus Detroit. I've got a hard time believing he is going to come in and put up a lot of zeros against a Kansas City team that hits pretty well at home. At the plate themselves, Houston has been very solid on the season ranking in the top five in most categories across the board highlighted by hitting .277 as a team, averaging 9.52 hits per game, and averaging 5.45 runs per game ranking them second, second, and third in the league respectively. They are red-hot right now but despite that fact, I think there is a little bit of value in fading them today.

Kansas City Royals

Ian Kennedy takes the mound for Kansas City and comes in with a 5.12 ERA but a solid 1.23 whip. He has really struggled over his last few starts allowing 14 earned runs in just 10 innings of work versus Minnesota, Cleveland, and Detroit. The main issue for him has been giving up the long ball as he has allowed six home runs in his last four starts. Still, all that being said he’s a much better pitcher than his current ERA displays and on the season despite those numbers batters are hitting just .198 against him this season. At the plate, Kansas City has been less than stellar ranking in the bottom five in the league in most categories. However, at home they are a bit of a different monster as all of their offensive statistics go up decently so I like for them to break Houston’s current streak and come out with a much-needed win.

MLB Odds

Oddsmakers are made Kansas City a small underdog across the board at around +115 and for my MLB pick, I will take them on the plus money line. Although Houston is as red-hot I think Kennedy is a much better pitcher than his current numbers and he should be able to do a good enough job in keeping Houston in check while the offense puts up more than enough runs.
