SBR will have previews and free MLB picks for the entire Dodgers-Diamondbacks series that starts Tuesday in Los Angeles with Japanese rookie Kenta Maeda on the mound.

Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers Game 3

By: Willie Bee

There were plenty of chances for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers to score runs Wednesday night. But opportunities not seized are just that, opportunities, and a combined 0-for-11 performance by both teams with runners in scoring position kept the plate crossings to a minimum in LA's 3-1 victory.

The clubs will close out their first of six series this year on Thursday, start time at Dodgers Stadium listed at 10:10 PM (ET). Our initial pitching battle pits Robbie Ray for the Diamondbacks opposite Dodgers rookie Ross Stripling, Los Angeles listed as -140 chalk on the MLB odds at Heritage with the same 7½ total we had in Game 2.

XLA Rookie Off Tough No-Hit No-Decision In MLB Debut
Ray's season debut went okay last Friday at home against the Cubs, the 24 year old working six frames and allowing two runs. He left the game trailing, but Arizona's lineup picked him up with a couple of late runs to take a 3-2 victory. The Dodgers fared pretty well against southpaws a year ago, winning 25 of 44 games started by lefthanders, and they beat San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner last weekend. Ray split his four starts vs. LA in 2015, recording a fine 2.28 ERA in the efforts, that number chopped to 1.42 at Dodger Stadium where he went 1-1.

Stripling, a 5th-round pick in 2012 out of Texas A&M, did all he could to make a huge splash in his MLB debut last Friday in San Francisco. He was pulled one out into the eighth with a no-hitter, but Los Angeles relievers coughed up the chance for a win by allowing three late runs to the Giants in a 3-2 loss. The righthander earned the fifth slot in the LA rotation with four spring appearances and a 4.09 ERA.

Umpire Notes. Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
Thursday's umpire south of the dish will be Mark Carlson who has started the season with consecutive 'under' winners on the baseball odds. It's his second straight plate assignment in the Los Angeles area, the previous last Saturday's Rangers-Angels matchup in Anaheim that finished short of the total. Carlson's 2015 record favored the 'over,' though most of the high-side winners on his 17-12-3 O/U/P record came with totals at 7 or less (9-3).

We are faced with pretty much the same except for the wind which is forecast out of the NW in the 10-12 mph range at game time (in from left). Is this the game the bats finally break out? I'm not betting on that and will make my MLB picks on the 'under.'

Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers Game 2

By: Willie Bee

It was a case of not listening to myself Tuesday night when the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers opened their series. After noting LA relievers had been less than trustworthy, I put my trust in them for some reason and it cost both me and the Dodgers in a 4-2 Arizona win, all of the D-Backs runs coming against the bullpen.

Arizona hopes to build on the victory with Rubby de la Rosa on the hill for Game 2, the Dodgers countering with Alex Wood in the 10:10 PM (ET) clash. Los Angeles is decided -140 chalk on the MLB odds showing up at Intertops, 7½ the total and juiced to the 'over.'

Neither Pitcher A Mystery In Season Debuts
With his first start of the season cut short because Cub hitters were mashing, de la Rosa threw an inning between starts out of the bullpen last Saturday in another Arizona defeat. All told, the righthander worked 4.1 innings against Chicago, surrendering seven runs -- 6 earned -- and striking out four with three walks. Once a member of the LA staff, de la Rosa saw his former club four times in 2015 and had zero success. Both of his starts at Dodger Stadium ended in defeat, de la Rosa serving up four homers in 10 innings.

Wood also suffered in his only start of 2016, lasting five innings and allowing five runs in a 12-6 setback in San Francisco. He made six starts at Dodger Stadium last season, five of them coming after he was traded from Atlanta to Los Angeles, and recorded a 4-2 record with a very nice 2.21 ERA. The southpaw saw Arizona twice as a Dodger, one of the starts a disaster in Phoenix, and LA losing both games as Wood was charged with eight runs in eight combined innings of work.

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
Brian Gorman, who chiefs Crew H on the MLB umpire roster, is next in line to call the pitches in this series. The New York native is closing in on 750 regular season plate assignments, and his first two this year went 'over' the baseball odds with extra room to spare. Gorman hasn't trended one way or another on totals for several years now, his record since the start of the 2012 campaign standing 47-50-6 O/U/P. It's tough to think the Dodgers are going to lose another one at home to Arizona in this set, but their bullpen cannot be trusted at this time. My free MLB pick is going to be on the 'over' tonight in LA.

12th April
Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers Game 1

By: Willie Bee

Everything was looking pretty rosy for the Los Angeles Dodgers to begin the 2016 season. The schedule maker put them on the road in San Diego, and not only did the Dodgers sweep the Padres, they shut them out in all three games.

Then came a long weekend stop in San Francisco where kinks began to show in a 4-game set against the Giants. After outscoring San Diego 25-0 in the first series, Los Angeles dropped three of four in San Fran where the Giants stepped on the pay station 26 times, a big chunk of the runs coming plateward thanks to a leaky bullpen.

Los Angeles can exact a little revenge on the Giants when San Francisco comes to Tinseltown later this week; but first, the Dodgers will try to get back in winning form with a three game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the first slated for a 4:10 PM (ET) first pitch on Tuesday. Patrick Corbin gets the call for Arizona, Japanese rookie Kenta Maeda making his second big league start for the Dodgers. MLB odds at BetOnline have LA -155 with 7 for the total, priced evenly high and low.

Dodgers Have Been Rude Hosts Vs. Snakes
After Arizona won the season series three straight years from 2011-13, Los Angeles has bounced back to completely dominate the rivalry the past two years. The Dodgers are 28-10 in that span to build an 174-141 advantage over the history of play, with wins in 15 of the last 19 played at Dodger Stadium.

The Diamondbacks, of course, hope that stealing away one of LA's best pitchers in recent years, Zack Greinke, will help at least slow the recent Dodgers dominance, but their new free agent acquisition is off to a slow start and will not appear in this series.

'Over' bettors were rewarded twice as often in the clashes at Chavez Ravine last season, totals running 6-3-1 O/U/P on the baseball odds with each game closing in the 6-8 run range. Dodger games went 3-3-1 during LA's season-opening road trip while the D-Backs finished 4-3 O/U during their homestand against the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs.

Will Maeda Stretch This Start Out To 100 Pitches?
Despite being favored in four of the games at home, another game closing close to a push, Arizona could only manage two wins overall, one of the dubyas as a small underdog. Greinke took two of the defeats, and while he should help the Diamondbacks in the long run, the NL West is still expected to be a two horse race between the Dodgers and Giants.

Corbin dropped one of the other games in Phoenix, the Rockies doing all of their scoring via three long balls among their eight hits. That's already a third of the home runs Corbin allowed in 16 starts last year when he was slowed early by a sore shoulder. Two of his starts came against the Dodgers, both Arizona losses though he pitched well in the LA appearance (6 IP, 2 ER).

Maeda had about as good of an MLB debut as a player could have, starting one of the three shutouts in San Diego last Wednesday and even managing to collect his first home run in the 7-0 whitewashing. The 28 year old closed at -145 at Pinnacle, and got through six innings on 84 pitches. He's a mystery to these Diamondback hitters, so we'll see if manager Dave Roberts leaves him out there a little longer this time, especially since LA relievers rank 12th in the NL with a 5.79 ERA.

We shouldn't have to worry about the weather in LA where Tuesday's forecast calls for temps to rise into the low 70s with a light southerly breeze (out to center) and sunny skies. Maeda should keep the D-Backs off the plate enough for me to make my free MLB pick on the Dodgers with a run line play.
