Yu Darvish makes his Chicago debut as heavy chalk on the MLB odds tonight in Miami, and the Cubs need a big effort from him after Friday’s 17-inning marathon.

Free MLB Pick: Under 8½
Best Line Offered: at Bookmaker

The last time we saw Yu Darvish, he was in a Los Angeles uniform and getting knocked around by Houston in Game 7 of the World Series. He has since traded in Dodger blue for Chicago blue and makes his Cubs debut Saturday night in Miami against the Marlins.

While we know Darvish will pitch for Chicago, we aren’t 100% sure who ends up starting the game for Miami. That’s because the Marlins originally planned to send Odrisamer Despaigne to the bump this evening, but had to use the righthander in Friday’s 17-inning marathon. Bookmaker initially sent the Cubs out as -230 chalk with 8½ for the total, but that could change should Miami change its plans on the hill.

Can Darvish Build Off Fine Spring In 1st Season With Cubs?

Chicago opened the series Thursday with an 8-4 decision as Ian Happ homered on the very first pitch of the 2018 season to lead a 3-HR barrage for the Cubs. Miami evened the set last night as +180 underdogs on the MLB odds with a 2-1 win that lasted 5 hours and 18 minutes with the clubs combining to use 14 pitchers. Miguel Rojas’ RBI single ended things in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Darvish signed a 6-year, $126 million contract with the Cubs just before Spring Training got underway. He started last season with the Rangers before being dealt to the Dodgers at the trade deadline. Houston chased him in the second innings of both World Series starts, and the general thought was Darvish was tipping his pitches. He faced the Fish in his final Texas start last July and was knocked around for 10 runs before leaving in the fourth.

Despaigne threw just 11 pitches at the end of Friday’s contest, and the Marlins had not confirmed their plans with him tonight as of press. Miami could opt to move up Sunday’s schedule starter, Dillon Peters. Despaigne faced the Cubs once before while a member of the Padres in 2015, working six innings and allowing two runs.

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

Chris Guccione is expected to have the plate for the 7:10 PM (ET) start at Marlins Park. The 17-year veteran split his dish assignments in 2017 down the middle, 15-15-1 O/U/P, and is 2-3 in this park over his career. Three of the four Cubs-Marlins matchups on this field in 2017 stayed ‘under’ the totals.

Both teams will be operating with short bullpens this evening, Chicago skipper Joe Maddon already ruling closer Brandon Morrow and Eddie Butler out. I’m not fond of laying -200 on any game, and especially when there’s so much uncertainty like this one, so let’s go with anh ‘under’ play for our free baseball pick.
