With the starting pitching being somewhat suspect for Tuesday’s slate of MLB games, we’ll see if this comes into play with our picks and whether we favor the betting totals or stay away from them due to the lack of reliability at the mound.

We split on the day as the Nats game stayed 'under' the total, but the Cubs got beaten in extra innings after a well-pitched game by Jeff Samardzija.

Arizona Diamondbacks (11-24) vs. Milwaukee Brewers (22-11)
Steal of a Deal
Considering how poorly the D’Backs have played this season as they’re coming off of a 8-3 loss to Milwaukee last night, the odds look pretty favorable if you side with Milwaukee in this game.

The Brewers have had a very successful season and a major reason for this is the improvement in their pitching staff. Last night it was Garza picking up the win, tonight Marco Estrada (2-1, 3.13) who has been fairly effective, gets his chance at an underachieving D’Backs squad.

There’s no Ryan Braun tonight, but Marco Estrada has been the model of consistency this season. He’s had 6 starts and has gone at least 5 2/3 innings in every start and hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a game. That’s just enough to keep Milwaukee in the game and then some. It also allows an effective Brewers' offense to take over.

Carlos Gomez
He’s not well liked by opponents because he likes to admire his work and watch his hits, but Carlos Gomez is a superb leadoff hitter and overall baseball player. He can basically do it all. In last night’s game, Gomez was 5 for 5 where getting on-base is concerned as he had 2 hits, 3 walks, a home run and 3 runs batted in. With Ryan Braun out of the lineup, Carlos Gomez is Milwaukee’s go to guy and it’s working well for the Brew Crew.

Take Milwaukee at home in your MLB picks, with a respectable starting pitcher in Estrada, and decent odds considering who their opponent is.

Chicago White Sox (16-17) vs. Chicago Cubs (11-19)
A Mess At Starting Pitching
With reliever Hector Noesi (0-2, 11.12) starting for the Sox after being traded by Texas and Edwin Jackson (2-2, 5.24) starting for the Cubbies, I don’t see how either one of these teams can be confident with the pitcher that they put out. That said, the Cubs still have a major edge in starting pitching in this matchup.

The Cubs are actually betting favorites, but they haven’t proven that they can be reliable to the bettor while the total is a mere 7 for this game. Sometimes the Wrigley Field wins can affect the betting total, but considering the below average pitching tonight, 7 is a very low total.

Both teams have plenty of firepower with players like Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro, and Emilio Bonifacio for the Cubs. The White Sox have the 2nd highest run total in the majors, are 7th in batting average and 6th in slugging percentage.

Let’s also not forget that the White Sox have two boppers in Jose Abreu (12 HR, 35 RBI) and Adam Dunn (5 HR, 12 RBI). This game is going 'over' the total.
