Our MLB handicapping expert examines a pair of starting pitching matchups today between the A’s/Angels and Brewers/Giants. Read this insightful article which uncovers decisive betting edges in each game.

Oakland A’s vs. LA Angels at 3:35 PM ET
The A’s will send veteran southpaw Scott Kazmir to the mound for this matinee affair. The Oakland hurler has put together an impressive resume in 2014, going 18-8 against the money line, and with a stellar 3.08 ERA. However, he’s struggled over his past 6-starts by posting a very lofty 6.28 ERA in those outings. His most recent start came at home this past Sunday versus tonight’s very same opponent, and describing it as disastrous would be a vast understatement. He allowed 7 earned runs, on 10-hits, in just 3.0 innings of work, during a 9-4 loss.

The Angels will go with right-hander Matt Shoemaker. He’s been untouchable over his last 3-starts going 3-0 against the money, with an excellent performance line that includes a 0.88 ERA, a 0.54 WHIP, and a better than 5:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Advantage: We have one pitcher (Kazmir) who’s been in an extended funk, and another (Shoemaker) who’s pitching with extreme confidence. Let’s not be guilty of outsmarting ourselves when assessing this matchup. I give a huge edge to Shoemaker over Kazmir, and especially in light of the cheap money line price in MLB Odds for this game.

Brewers vs. Giants
The Brewers will send veteran Kyle Lohse to the mound today. Lohse has certainly had a stellar overall season by going 17-9 against the money with a solid 3.42 ERA. However he’s displayed some shaky form over his last 4-starts, as evidenced by his sizable 6.16 ERA, and large 1.89 WHIP in those outings. On a positive note, Lohse has gone 6-2 versus the money in day games this season with a very good 2.82 ERA.

The Giants will counter with southpaw Madison Bumgarner who comes off a dominant outing this past Tuesday versus the Colorado Rockies. The Giants hurler tossed a complete game 1-hit shutout in that appearance, while striking out 13, and walking none during a 3-0 Giants win. Bumgarner has been superb over his last 3-starts posting an excellent 1.57 ERA, a microscopic 0.57 WHIP, and striking out 34 while walking just 1. In 6 career starts versus the Brewers he’s compiled a superb 1.67 ERA.

Advantage: If we were talking about the pitcher having the better season thus far, then the nod would go to Kyle Lohse. However, that’s not the topic of conversation here, we’re looking for the best betting edge and an MLB Pick for this evening, and that far and away favors Madison Bumgarner of the Giants.
