Our local MLB guru examines a couple of starting pitching matchups in the games between the Phillies vs. Nationals and Cardinals vs. Brewers. Read his revealing MLB handicapping article that discloses the best betting values in each game.

Phillies vs. Nationals 1:35 PM ET
The Phillies starter Cole Hamels has quietly put together a solid year considering he’s pitching for a bad team. The veteran southpaw has a stellar 2.50 ERA in 25-starts. He’s been especially good on the road as evidenced by his superb 1.62 ERA in 13-starts. Hamels has gone 4-0 overall in his last 4 against the money, and with a solid 3.24 ERA. In 3-starts versus the Nationals this season he’s compiled a sparkling 2.57 ERA. The Phillies have won 12-games since 8/15, and Hamels has been the starter in 4 (33%) of those.

The Nationals will counter with a southpaw as well in Gio Gonzalez. The Nationals hurler has displayed very good form over his last 3-starts by posting a 2.84 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. He’s gone 8-3 against the money at home this year despite a not so impressive 4.12 ERA in those outings. Gonzalez has gone 0-3 against the money versus the Phillies in 2014 with a lofty 4.76 ERA.

Free MLB Pick: Sometimes we just need to keep things simple when looking at MLB Odds and handicapping. Hamels has been the better of these two pitchers this year hands down. He’s pitched well versus the Nationals, and Gonzalez has struggled versus the Phillies this season. I’m giving the betting edge here to Cole Hamels over Gio Gonzalez.

Cardinals vs. Brewers 2:10 PM ET
The Cardinals will send out their ace Adam Wainwright for the final game of this key NL Central series. Wainwright has been terrific on the road this season, going 10-6 against the money, with a shining 1.88 ERA. However, he’s been less than dominating during his last 7-starts overall. In those outings he’s posted a lofty 5.28 ERA. Wainwright has seen his last 4-starts versus the Brewers go over the total, and has gone 4-1 in his last 5 against the money versus Milwaukee.

The Brewers will go with their youngster Jimmy Nelson. The Brewers right-hander has gone 4-6 against the money since being called up from the minors in late May, and has posted an unimpressive 4.86 ERA. He’s also gone a dismal 1-5 in his starts during the day. He’s faced the Cardinals once this season and it wasn’t pretty. In that outing he allowed 6 earned runs on 8-hits in just 4 1/3 innings of work during a 10-2 loss.

Free MLB Pick: Rather than giving either of these starting pitchers a betting edge, I’m more inclined to suggest the best MLB pick for this game is to wager on going over the total.
