This is one of the best times of the sports year as the NFL tackles its way into your living room. That said, we’re getting to a crucial moment in the baseball season when teams need to make a move. Time for some profitable bets.

Capper Catalano’s Record
187-166 -24.81 Units

We split yesterday, but took a hit as we lost with our rare 3 unit-play with the Detroit Tigers and the very inept Justin Verlander and hit with our 1- unit play with the Mets and the great young talent, Jacob deGrom. Moral of the story is don’t trust Verlander for more than 1- unit and even that’s pushing it; so noted.

Boston Red Sox (61-78) vs. New York Yankees (71-66)
A Must-Win For New York
I call this a “must-win” over a “must- win situation” as the Yankees are coming off of a huge 5-1 victory over Boston and Brian McCann is finally starting to show some confidence at the plate as he bashed a home run at Yankee Stadium yesterday.

This is a must-win because the Yankees are facing the bottom-feeding Boston Red Sox and starter Brandon Workman (1-8, 4.93). If Chris Capuano and the Yankees can’t put a licking on Workman, they don’t deserve to be in the post-season. New York is currently 4 games behind the Seattle Mariners for the final wild card spot with 25 games remaining in the 2014 MLB Season. Making the playoffs is possible, but this is a game in which the Yankees need to put away early and not give the Sox any confidence whatsoever.

Better Late Than Never
Brian McCann has been known as one of the best catchers in the game. That said, he came to New York and let the pressure of the big city and the fans get to him.

Yesterday night’s game appeared to me to be a turning point as McCann went 4 for 4 and raised his batting average to .244 on the season to go along with 17 HR and 61 RBI. Without Martin Prado in the lineup, the Yankees need some type of spark and Brian McCann will definitely come into play.

If any of you remember when he was with the Braves and Carlos Gomez blasted a home run against Atlanta and stood there to admire it in a game, McCann didn’t like what he saw and wouldn’t let Gomez touch home plate; now that’s a competitor.

Look for Jacoby Ellsbury to be a factor against his old team. He left Boston at the right time and is the most productive player in the Yankees offense. Capuano should get enough run support to work to where he doesn’t need to hold the Sox to just  one run or two. I look for an easy Yankee victory on Thursday.

Detroit Tigers (76-63) vs. Cleveland Indians (71-66)
Scherzer Time
This isn’t Justin Verlander dealing with the Tribe tonight, this is former 20 game winner Max Scherzer (15-5, 3.26), who has been dominant over the past few seasons getting the start.

In seasons past, Detroit had usually had the division wrapped up by now, but players like Alex Gordon and Billy Butler have elevated their games with Kansas City and have given Detroit a run for their money. With all of that said, when it comes down to it, Detroit has the best combination of power and pitching against the teams that they’re dealing with and experience is also a factor.

You look at that Detroit lineup and it’s quite scary. Rajai Davis is leading off and the change to the leadoff spot has done him well as he’s producing more than than Austin Jackson . Ian Kinsler is next in line and he’s always good for a gapper or a clutch hit at times. Then comes the best player in baseball over the last decade in Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera is having a down year that anyone would love to have. Finally, the Tigers have Victor Martinez, who is having an MVP-like season, followed by J.D. Martinez who is hitting above .300 with power. This team has the ability to win it all. Tonight’s game is huge and Scherzer should stifle the Indians in their own ball park. Take Detroit with confidence as your MLB picks.
