The Cubs haven’t scored a run since last Saturday, and yet they’re favored on the MLB odds Thursday when they begin a four-game series in Milwaukee.

The bad news for the Chicago Cubs is they still have four more days to go before finally getting to play a home game this season. The good news is once they do finish up this long series in Milwaukee against the Brewers, one of their longest road trips of the 2018 season will be behind them.

The 4-game series opener gets underway in Beer City at 8:10 PM (ET), Jon Lester (0-0, 8.10) of Chicago set to face Brent Suter (1-0, 5.40) of the Brewers. The Cubs arrive in Milwaukee after less than impressive stops in Miami and Cincinnati to begin the season, but still the favorites in this one with Bookmaker listing them on a -125 money line. The Brewers opened the year in San Diego, where they swept the Padres before coming home to drop 2 of 3 to the Cardinals, and Thursday’s scoreboard target is 9 runs.

Yelich Day-To-Day For Brewers

More good news for Joe Maddon and the Cubs comes in the form of having two days off before this series after one of their contests in Cincinnati was rained out. That should help rest a Chicago bullpen that was taxed pretty hard in the series with the Marlins. The bad news is with those days off, the Cubs haven’t scored a run since last Saturday following successive shutouts Sunday and Monday. Lester was knocked around in Miami last week and is facing the Brewers for the first time since 2016.

The bad news for the Brewers is they may be without Christian Yelich for this one after the outfielder suffered a strained oblique in Wednesday’s 6-0 loss to the Cardinals, a game that closed around a pick on the MLB odds. The good news is the injury is considered minor and manager Craig Counsell has plenty of depth in the outfield. Suter picked up one of Milwaukee’s wins last week in San Diego, and the Harvard grad pitched well against the Cubs last season in two starts.

Rivalry Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

This has been a pretty close rivalry over the years, the Cubs owning a slight 169-161 edge and winning 76 of the 148 contests played at Miller Park since it opened in 2001. Chicago has won the last four seasons series after taking 10 of 19 vs. the Brew Crew a year ago. ‘Under’ bettors were rewarded in eight of the 10 contests in Milwaukee.

With both teams blanked in their last games, and the Cubbies held scoreless in their last two, maybe the smart free baseball pick would be in the ‘under.’ But nobody’s ever accused me of being real smart, so I’ll play the home ‘dogs tonight.
