Place your MLB picks 'under' as the Chicago Cubs continue their series against the Chicago White Sox, knowing that this is a really good pitching matchup against two teams that will have their hands full at the plate.
Cubs vs. White Sox Betting Odds
If this game was played in Wrigley Field, a National League park, the total would be lower. MLB odds makers have come out with the line at 7.5 for this matchup with a higher juice at around -120. At Bookmaker sports book though you can get under the total here at -115. I'm not a big proponent of paying juice but with these two pitchers on the mound I think this is decent value on what should be a low-scoring affair.
Dan Haren gets the start for the Cubs and comes in with a 3.55 ERA, 1.12 whip, 97 strikeouts, and 8-7 record on the year. For the Cubs he is 1-0 and has allowed six earned runs in two starts over 10 innings. The biggest issue for him so far pitching for the Cubs is that he has allowed three home runs in his two starts, look for him though today to limit that aspect as the White Sox rank in the lower part of the league in home runs per game. He is a guy that will bend but won't break, and in his last 10 starts he has only allowed four runs or more just two times allowing four runs against the Cardinals, and five runs in Philadelphia. Besides those two starts he has been really consistent in keeping the run totals down.
The Cubs rank 19th in runs scored per game at 4.00, 20th in OPS at .699, and 28th in batting average hitting .240 as a team. In today's matchup a good sign for them is that they seem to hit better on the road than they do at home, but they are facing a Cy Young type pitcher today. Although they have been pretty hot as of late, I think they might struggle little bit today against the quality pitcher like Chris Sale. Don't look for the Cubs to continue their home run barrage against him.
Chicago White Sox
Chris Sale gets the call for the White Sox with a 3.47 ERA, 1.07 whip, 193 strikeouts, and at 10-7 record. He is coming off a very solid start against the Angels in which he allowed just two earned runs over five hits in seven innings. Prior to that he had two horrible starts back to back allowing seven earned runs in both. It seems he is back on track though and should come into this game focused with a playoff like atmosphere. I see this game going one of two ways for him either he struggles tremendously and gives up a lot of runs early, or he is lights out and goes deep into the ballgame, I am siding with the latter. He has the kind of stuff that could give a team that is overachieving a little bit like the Cubs a lot of trouble.
The White Sox rank 24th in runs scored per game at 3.78, 25th in OPS at .684, and 20th in batting average hitting .249. Offensively the White Sox are one of a few teams that actually hit worse at home than on the road. This does not bode well for them against a solid veteran pitcher like Haren. They might score couple here or there but I don't see them having a lot of quality at-bats today.
This will be a playoff like atmosphere for the White Sox because this is as close as they are going to get. For the Cubs they want to continue to roll making their push towards grabbing a wildcard spot. Today though, we have a matchup of two good pitchers against two statistically subpar offenses. Side with the guys on the mound to have two quality starts and back the under as your MLB pick today.
