The world champion Cubs are off to a mediocre start but with Chicago 8-1 L9 Jon Lester Starts against the Redlegs and the champs 20-6 L26 vs. Cincinnati, is backing the chalk and paying the price the pick here in this NL Central series opener?

Odds Overview

Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds (WGN, FSOH, DTV 307, DTV 660, 7:10 p.m. ET): Southpaw Jon Lester (0-0, 1.00 ERA) and the Cubs (8-7) head to Great American Ball Park and Cincinnati (9-6) Friday to face RHP Tim Adelman (0-0, 2.25 ERA) and the Reds in Game 1 of this NL Central series. Sportsbooks have Chicago -162 chalks—down from -180 open—with the Total 8½0 -115 (BetOnline) while the Run Line sees the Cubs -1½ -105 with the Reds +1½ -115 (BetOnline). Chicago flip-flopped Lester’s start in the Rotation with Jake Arrieta, who will go Saturday (1:10 p.m. ET) against Cincinnati’s Cody Reed while the Cubs will pit John Lackey against Bronson Arroyo in Game 3 Sunday (1:10 p.m. ET).

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs (+450 to win World Series, Sportsbetting.ag) have looked average so far with nobody on the World Series champions batting over .300. But Chicago has proved it can rally from behind, already winning three games when trailing by 3+ Runs in the 6th or later. In the Cubs exciting 7-4, walk-off HR (Addison Russell) win over Milwaukee at Wrigley Wednesday, Manager Joe Maddon had a starting lineup of: RF Szczur, 3B Bryant, 1B Rizzo, SS Russell, C Contreras, CF Almora Jr, 2B Báez with SP Kyle Hendricks hitting eighth and LF Jay ninth.

Chicago (+180 to win NL, Bovada) is 58-23 L81 Game 1’s, 21-7 L28 Fridays and 8-0 in Lester’s L8 Fridays. The Under is 4-0 L4 Cubs Fridays, 14-3-1 L18 Lester Starts while the Over is 15-6-1 L22 Chicago Road dates.

Cincinnati Reds

Billy Hamilton (6-10 lifetime vs. Lester), Adam Duvall (4 HR, 12 RBI), Zack Cozart (.405) and the Reds (165/1 to win World Series, BetDSI) are off to an enigmatic start, leading the NL Central with a 4-5 Home mark but a 5-1 Road record. In the rubber game of their 3-game IL series against the Orioles in Cincinnati Thursday, Reds Manager Bryan Price had a starting Lineup of: CF Hamilton, 2B Peraza, 1B Votto, LF Duvall, 3B Suárez, SS Cozart, RF Schebler, C Turner with Scott Feldman starting.

Cincinnati (250/1 to win NL, Bovada) is 17-35 its L52 vs. LHP Starters, 17-41 L58 vs. Starters with WHIPs under 1.15 and 1-4 L5 Fridays. The Over is 11-5 L16 Cincinnati Home games, 34-15-5 L54 vs. Starters with WHIPs under 1.15 while the Under is 4-1 L5 Reds’ Game 1’s and 5-2 both in Adelman’s L7 Starts and on Grass.

Cincinnati Weather, Series and Side Totals

TWC forecast for Cincinnati Friday night calls for Showers early, a Low of 47° with 10 mph N Winds. With the Reds using their Bullpen so much, Reliever Adelman has been called to start here. In his last outing, he allowed 1 Run in 4 IP vs. Milwaukee.

The Over is 4-0-1 L5 Lester Road Starts vs. Cincinnati and Chicago is an impressive 8-1 Lester’s L9 Starts, 20-6 L26 against the Big Red Machine and 36-15-3 L54 meetings in The City Formerly Known As Losantiville. With the Over 36-15-3 the L54 meetings in Cincinnati (66.7%) and the Cubs (23-8 L3 Lester Starts) probably glad to get out of Wrigley Field, backing Lester and the total Over are the suggested MLB Picks.
