A successful homestand has the Cubs feeling good as they head out for a West Coast trip. Join us for a free baseball pick in their series opener in Los Angeles against the Dodgers on Friday.

MLB Season Record: 18-31 (-14.41)

A showdown of preseason favorites in the NL is on the docket in Los Angeles this weekend when the Dodgers host the Chicago Cubs. Friday’s lid-lifter finds Alex Wood and the Dodgers -134 on the morning lines at 5Dimes, Jake Arrieta slated to pitch for the Cubs and a 7½-run total that has dropped a half since the opener.

Wood Hopes To Avenge Earlier Poor Showing At Wrigley

Arrieta enjoyed his best start since his season debut his last time out, limiting the Brewers to five hits and an unearned run at Wrigley in a 13-6 rout on -200 MLB odds. The former TCU star has dropped his last three road starts, however, and looked bad in all three (14 IP combined, 14 ER, 7 BB). He missed facing the Dodgers when they came to Chicago in April, and has only faced them twice in LA since joining the Cubs midway through 2013. One of those assignments was a loss (5 IP, 4 ER) and the other was a no-hitter on Aug. 30, 2015.

Days off and DL returns led to Manager Dave Roberts tweaking his rotation a few times recently. He has decided to remove Hyun-Jin Ryu from the mix, at least for now, meaning Wood opens this series. The southpaw is pitching on seven days rest after earning his fourth straight win last Friday vs. Miami. Wood tossed shutout baseball into the eighth to extend his scoreless inning streak to 20.2 IP and is making his second start of ‘17 against the Cubs. The first didn’t go well, the former Georgia Bulldog relieved in the fourth after walking five.

Rivalry Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Is this weekend the last time this year we see the Cubs and Dodgers together on the same diamond? Maybe, at least that’s what the regular season schedule is telling us, though we can’t help but imagine a postseason get-together. By the time they complete this weekend set, the Cubs and Dodgers will have played 2,099 regular-season games with LA holding a slim .502 win percentage in the rivalry since 1890. Chicago won 2 of 3 at Wrigley in April, all of those games staying ‘under.’ The Dodgers have won the last two series in Los Angeles, only one of those six contests making it ‘over’ the marks.

A few clouds during the day give way to mostly clear skies this evening with temps in the mid-60s for the first pitch and a light WSW breeze (out to RF). I’m going to use the downward shift on the total to our advantage; both hurlers have been ‘over’ winners to this point, and that’s the direction I’m going with my free baseball pick.
