Today's starting pitchers in St. Louis have been struggling, and it's the Cubs' Jake Arrieta who is slightly favored on the MLB odds over Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals.

The NL Central continues to provide us with one of the better races in baseball as we reach the middle of the second month on the fixture. Four teams are packed within 2½ games of each other as the Cardinals cling to a very fragile lead in the division. The club that is 2½ games back just so happens to be the defending World Series champion Cubs, and the two rivals are heading to a decisive rubber game in their weekend series in Sr. Louis.

First pitch is slated for 2:15 PM (ET) and Chicago is short chalk around -120 with Jake Arrieta on the hill. Adam Wainwright is up next in the Cardinals rotation with oddsmakers listing an 8 run total that briefly rose to 8½ during the night before coming back down.

Chicago grabbed Friday's series opener by a 3-2 count, the Cubs winning as +130 underdogs on the MLB odds thanks to three solo homers and six scoreless innings from Eddie Butler who was making his 2017 debut. St. Louis bounced back for a 5-3 win Saturday as Carlos Martinez outpitched Jon Lester and helped his own cause with a couple of hits.

Is Wainwright's Career Coming To An End?

Considering how they've both been pitching, this mound duel is only big in name recognition. Then again, Arrieta and Wainwright did meet earlier this season and each gave one of their best efforts of 2017 in St. Louis where the Cubs eked out a 2-1 decision. That was the third time thw two clashed since Arrieta joined Chica , and the 2nd-straight triumph for the Cubs righthander over Wainwright.

St. Louis has struggled against Arrieta since he joined the Cubbies, Chicago 10-5 in his starts against the Cards. Matt Adams (7-22) ranks as the Redbird hitter who's had the most success against the former TCU star, Arrieta posting a sub-2.00 ERA against St. Louis in 84 innings as a Cub. Wainwright's struggles actually began last season. This will be his fourth try against Chicago the past two years, and the big righty has a bloated 6.86 ERA in the previous three.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

After missing all of 2016 due to medical leave, Bruce Dreckman is in line for his eighth plate assignment already of 2017, four of his last five going 'over' to leave him 5-2 O/U on the campaign. His only two 'under' winners fell just a half-run short of the totals and games are averaging 11.7 runs per game when he calls balls and strikes.

It should be a beautiful day for a ballgame at the latest rendition of Busch Stadium. Forecasters are calling for plenty of sunshine, temps in the low-to-mid 80s and 10 mph SSW (out to left-center) breeze. The 'over' is tempting, but I will instead go with Chicago for my free baseball pick.
