L.A. Dodgers players giving high fives

Game 2 in the Cubs and Dodgers matchup will be shown to most of the nation as part of FOX's regional package. For those betting baseball, this will be no simple selection with these two clubs.

Last night Los Angeles won 4-0 and Chicago will try and even the series on Saturday. What is the outlook for today, let's figure it out.

Pitching Matchup - Lackey vs. McCarthy

John Lackey (4-4, 4.82 ERA) has just not been sharp all season over his nine starts. A little digging finds the problem. Normally, the tall Texan allows 0.69 home runs per start for his lengthy career. This year he is at 1.33 per outing, which has been a real issue. Also, Lackey has either been grooving too many pitches or is not spotting the ball where he wants. This is a show with batters count of 0-0, where is allowing .565 batting average and .400 average with the count at either 1-0 or 2-0. Let's see if the right-hander returns to past success like he had against L.A. at 7-4 with 1.84 ERA.

Thus far, no major physical ailments for Brandon McCarthy (4-1, 3.76), which is why he's been relatively consistent. When not battling something wrong, McCarthy keeps the ball down, throws strikes and does not mess around with hitters. What is meant by that is 19 of his 35 strikeouts have come on 0-2 counts. The righty is 1-1 with a 1.47 ERA versus Chicago in four starts.

These NL Teams Will Test Pitchers

Playing at Dodgers Stadium usually means lower scoring games, but with a 4:15 PDT start today and a day game tomorrow, the thicker night air will be less a problem. The Chicago offense is at almost five runs a game (4.9), yet as those generating MLB picks are aware, it has come in bursts. That might become less of issues as we roll along, with players like Anthony Rizzo and Ben Zobrist starting to smack the horsehide, which brings greater continuity to the Cubs offense.

Los Angeles is also at 4.9 RPG and they will be without one of their top weapons in Justin Turner, who is batting .379 and on the DL. Youngsters Cody Bellinger and Corey Seager has helped keep the line moving for scoring runs and both will have to come through for the Dodgers to prevail today. After a good looking start, Yasiel Puig is down to .226 average.

Betting Odds, History and Bullpen Numbers

The MLB odds have Los Angeles as a -115 favorite with a total of 8. In the past three seasons, the Dodgers hold a 6-4 edge over the Cubs at home and these two clubs are 19-5 UNDER anywhere they have played since 2015. These are two of the best bullpens in the NL, who have given up a few one-run leads late in games.

The Winner Is......

Two aspects I cannot ignore is L.A. is 37-11 at Dodger Stadium when facing an NL that scores 4.5 or more runs a game and Chicago is 4-15 as a road underdog of +100 to +150. The Dodgers get the call.
