Two American League teams on the rise offer plenty of betting value on Sunday. Read on to find out why and end the week on a high note with our MLB picks of the day for May 28.

Mariners vs. Red Sox

The Mariners have been a disappointment this season, their front office made a significant investment to improve the roster and the team just hasn't lived up to expectations, as they're currently at the bottom of the American League West. The Red Sox on the other hand are finally starting to play decent baseball and they're tough to beat at Fenway Park.

Christian Bergman will start for the Mariners, he had given up three earned runs or less in his first three starts but he pitched poorly against the Nationals last Monday, allowing 10 earned runs on 14 hits (four home runs) in just four innings of a 10-1 loss, which made his ERA go from 2.25 to 6.30. Bergman is now 0-2 with an abysmal 13.00 ERA in two road starts and facing Boston won't help.

The Red Sox will turn to Rick Porcello, who gave up five runs (four earned) on 11 hits with four strikeouts and no walks over six innings in Tuesday's 11-6 win over the Rangers. Porcello hasn't been the same pitcher that won the American League Cy Young award last year but he has thrown at least six innings in eight of his 10 starts this season and he posted a 3.21 ERA in two starts against the Mariners last season. I'm taking the Red Sox at home at -174 MLB odds here.

Rays vs. Twins

The Rays are playing well as of late and they've managed to maintain a winning record, which is impressive for a team that many considered among the worst in the majors. The Twins are also one of the most surprising teams this season, they were expected to have to worst record in the American League Central but they currently lead the division and they're not showing signs of slowing down any time soon.

Alex Cobb will take the hill for the Rays after allowing four earned runs on seven hits (two home runs) and three walks with five strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings of a 4-0 loss against the Angels last Monday, falling to 4-4 with a 3.82 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP in 10 starts and he has posted a 3.93 ERA in six road starts.

The Twins will give the ball to Kyle Gibson, who's having a tough year so far. Gibson won his last start despite allowing six earned runs on seven hits over five innings in a 14-7 win over the Orioles last Monday and he's just 1-4 with an 8.62 ERA and a 2.01 WHIP in seven starts, including 0-3 with an 8.47 ERA in four home starts and 0-3 with a 10.34 ERA in four day starts.

I'm adding Cobb and the Rays to my MLB picks for Sunday because Gibson has been a mess all season long, especially at home and in day games.
