After almost 6 months of baseball, we’re down to the last week of the MLB regular season for 2014. I’m looking to finish off the regular season with a bang as there are some desperate teams out there. Time to place our betting picks!

A 162 Game Grind
Even though we also have the NFL season going on, this is when the MLB gets extra exciting to bet and watch. The seasons begin to change and for some teams that could mean winning their prize in the cold; in the dead of autumn.

Teams are pushed to the brink of elimination and that makes managers make moves that they normally wouldn’t make while some teams could sit starters and we need to be aware of that.

Caution: The MLB Lineups aren’t out this early, but always go to a fantasy site like rotoworld or even Twitter to check the starting lineups; it could mean the difference between a win and a loss.

Baltimore Orioles (93-62) vs. New York Yankees (80-75)

Taking One On the “Chen”
The Baltimore Orioles have celebrated and can either sit back or deliver a knockout blow to the New York Yankees faint playoff hopes as Wei-Yin Chen (16-4, 3.58) gets the start for the O’s and although he’s gotten great run support, he’s done his job well as you can see from his regular season record. Don’t look for Orioles manager Buck Showalter to overuse Chen as he faces Michael Pineda (3-5, 2.15) and a desperate Yankees club.

Picking Up Steam
The great Masahiro Tanaka came back and showed the world that he doesn’t need Tommy John surgery and gave the Yankees a lift with a 5-2 victory over Toronto yesterday. Brian McCann waited all season, but finally broke out with a 2 home run day. The Yankees have won 4 out of their last 5 games, but is it too late?

The Kansas City Royals, who have the 2nd wild card spot, are supposed to finish a game that was postponed with Cleveland.

The Royals are losing 4-2 in this game in extra innings. If the Royals lose as expected, they’ll be 4 games ahead of New York with just 7 games remaining in the season. New York needs an outright miracle, but they can only focus on today’s game. I love the “do or die” situations and the Yankees are just a -114 betting favorite on the MLB odds. Look for the desperate team to win at Yankee Stadium.

Los Angeles Angels (96-60) vs. Oakland Athletics (85-70)

Not Out Of the Woods Yet
The Oakland Athletics need a huge performance out of Jeff Samardzija (4-5, 3.13) this evening as they hold the top wild card spot in the American League and with an assumed Royals loss in the first game of that postponement game with Cleveland, the A’s will be 1 game up on the Royals. They don’t have a playoff spot sealed by any means.

If Kansas City decides to put a 2 or 3 spot up in extra innings, this could put a lot of pressure on the Athletics who have struggled the 2nd half of the season.

Jeff Samardzija
Samardzija’s play has been sort of perplexing to me. When he was a member of the Chicago Cubs, he would rarely allow a run in a 9 inning game, the Cubs would never give him run support, and he would pick up a loss. This was before some of the Cubs young talent came up from the minor leagues.

Now, Samardzija is in the catbird’s seat for a contender, but he hasn’t been world-beater with Oakland; he doesn’t even possess a winning record for the A’s.

In his last 2 starts, Samardzija has turned it around, not allowing a single run in 15 innings pitched and still receiving 2 no-decisions; talk about déjà vu!

Tonight’s game against an Angels team that already has a post-season berth locked up as the best team in baseball is a huge game for Jeff Samardzija and the Oakland A’s. Although the Halos have a great amount of talent with players like Mike Trout, I expect the team that’s more desperate with a pitcher that’s looking to prove something to win tonight’s game. Back the A's for your MLB picks.
