Sports handicapper Ian Cameron provides a look at MLB Overnight Betting Lines for the games taking place on Friday, July 29.

Cincinnati Reds vs. San Diego Padres
We have two very suspect arms on the mound here. Brandon Finnegan has been on a downward slope for quite some time as the Reds lefty has been pounded to the tune of 21 runs in his last 17.1 innings of work. He faces a tough matchup against a San Diego lineup that has been much better offensively in the last third of the season and they have been at their best against southpaws all season entering this game with the 5th best team OPS against lefties this season and I expect the Padres to be able to have their share of plate success against Finnegan here. On the flip side, Edwin Jackson has been walking a very fine line in two starts since joining the San Diego rotation and I don’t expect his ‘fortunate’ ride to last much longer.

Jackson has allowed just 5 runs in 12.1 innings over his first two starts against San Francisco and Washington but his advanced metrics and peripheral numbers are exceptionally poor. Jackson walked 8 and struck out just 5 during those outings. His 4.30 ERA for the season is well below his FIP, xFIP and SIERA which sit at 5.62, 6.24 and 6.18 respectively. He’s still the same old mediocre pitcher and he is poised to get hit here by a Cincinnati Reds lineup that have been swinging hot bats collectively putting up 54 runs in their last 9 games. Neither bullpen is very sturdy or reliable so the door should be open for late runs too. I expect this game to fly Over the total of 8.5, for my MLB pick, here at Petco Park on Friday night.

Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels
It appears we will have another opportunity to fade Tim Lincecum as we’ve done in each of his last few starts as he is scheduled to take the mound for the LA Angels as they welcome the Boston Red Sox to town. Lincecum has been beyond horrendous of late lit up repeatedly by the opposition yielding 30 runs in his last 24 innings pitched and is coming off a short 1.1 inning in which he got hammered for 8 runs including 3 home runs by the Houston Astros. The potent Boston lineup is not what I consider a recipe to cure what is ailing Lincecum who simply doesn’t throw hard enough or well enough these days to get Major League hitters out. On the flip side, Rick Porcello has a 2.25 ERA over his last three starts and is in solid current form.

He hasn’t been at his best in the past against the LA Angels who scored 10 runs on 11 hits in 9.1 innings pitched by Porcello against the Angels in two starts last season. I like the Red Sox to really come out swinging here to begin this long road trip after a very disappointing home sweep at the hands of the Detroit Tigers and I’ll back Boston on the run line at MLB odds which should be an option that becomes available closer to first pitch on Friday night and I’ll also bet this game up and Over the total of 9.5 runs.
