Cardinals vs. Mets Evenly Matched Teams Favors An Over MLB Pick Tonight

Cardinals vs Mets

A rainout on Monday forces the Cardinals and Mets to play two in New York tonight, and the second game is currently close to a pick 'em on the MLB odds.

St. Louis Cardinals vs New York Mets
The St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets got an unexpected day off Monday when umpires called their series opener early. Some talk after the postponement was that perhaps the umps called it too early since the rain stopped shortly after the announcement and left behind a beautiful evening in Queens.

Regardless, Monday's day of rest means the clubs will have double duty Tuesday in New York, the makeup contest starting at 4:10 PM (ET) and Tuesday's regularly scheduled affair getting underway around 7:40 PM (ET), depending on how long Game 1 runs. Carlos Martinez and Noah Syndergaard are slated for the opener, and our focus here is the nightcap when Jaime Garcia takes his turn in the St. Louis rotation opposite Bartolo Colon.

Tight MLB odds for Game 2 have the contest nearly a pick 'em.  Heritage lists Colon and the Mets on a -108 price, the return on St. Louis at even money. The total opened 8 but has since dropped to 7½ at most sports books, the high side carrying extra tax.

Something Must Give With Starters Road/Home Trends
Tuesday's duel on the mound should be interesting since it involves two pitchers who have been fighting inconsistency through July. Garcia is 2-0 with a respectable 3.60 ERA in four starts this month, but the two no-decisions were both St. Louis losses in which the southpaw surrendered eight runs in a little more than 11 innings.

All four July assignments came at home, and Garcia owns a 4.40 road ERA though the Cardinals are 6-2 in those eight appearances. St. Louis has split his two starts on this mound, Garcia allowing five earned runs in 13 innings.

The Mets have won three of Colon's July starts despite the beefy Dominican pitching to a 6.10 ERA. The long ball has become something of a problem with batters sending six balls into the bleachers over Colon's 20+ IP this month after he served up just nine the first three months. Chicago's Anthony Rizzo took him deep twice last Wednesday at Wrigley in a 6-2 Cubs victory.

Colon enjoyed decent success against St. Louis until two games a year, the Cardinals plating 16 runs (15 earned) over the course of two starts and 8.2 IP. He has been a little better on the road than at home in 2016, but the end results have been okay with New York winning six of his nine assignments at Citi Field.

Totals Split 2-2 Last Time In New York
This is the first of two regular-season meetings on this year's slate, the Mets making a return visit to St. Louis about four weeks from now on their way home from a West Coast swing. The Cardinals lead the all-time series 388-350, that record including a couple of NLCS clashes in 2000 and 2006.

They've been regularly taking care of business against each other on their own diamonds, the Mets 17-10 at Citi Field since it opened in '09. The clubs split four here last season, both wins by the Cardinals skipping 'over' the odds while New York's two wins never made it to the totals.

Both the Mets and Cardinals have been playing around .500 since the all-star break, but they've been sporting opposite trends on the totals all season. St. Louis is 51-42-5 O/U/P, three of its last four going 'over' the marks while New York sits 40-54-3 with 10 of the last 12 staying 'under.' You never know how managers will set their lineups with two games on deck, but my free MLB pick will be to get behind the Cardinals' trend.
