St. Louis and Chicago have split the first two games of a four-game series at Wrigley, and the Cubs have a chance to sweep a double-header Tuesday night. But in a pitching battle between ML greenhorns this handicapper is leaning toward the Cardinals to earn a split.

Cards-Cubs Tuesday Game 2 Betting Odds
As of this writing, early Tuesday afternoon, the best price we could find on St. Louis with lefty Tim Cooney was the -106 offered at Heritage, while Chicago with Dallas Beeler could be found “getting” +100 at WagerWeb. And most of the market was listing a total of seven runs on tonight's game, although there were a few 6.5's out there.

The Situation
Chicago took the opener of today's double-header 7-4, getting another quality outing from Jake Arrieta, breaking open a close game with a four-run eighth inning. We hit on the Cubbies with our free MLB pick on the side in Game 1, but missed with the UNDER, as the teams combined to score eight runs in the last three innings.

With the win Chicago now trails St. Louis by 8.5 games in the NL Central.

Game 2 Pitching Match-Up
Beeler will be making his first start of this season for the Big Club, the third of his ML career. Chicago must be a little desperate in this spot, considering Beeler is 1-5 with a 6.33 ERA down at Triple-A Iowa this season.

Last season Beeler went 9-6/3.40 for Iowa, and made two spot starts for the Cubs, allowing four earned runs through 11 innings, with more walks, seven, than strikeouts, six.

Cooney (0-0, 5.40) will be making his third spot start of this season for his Big Club. Back in April, in his ML debut, he gave up three runs and seven hits in less than three innings against Philly, while last Thursday he held San Diego to two ER through six innings. So as a Major Leaguer Cooney has allowed five ER and 11 hits through 8 1/3 innings, although his 9/3 K/BB ratio isn't bad. The Cardinals split his two starts (winning his poor effort, losing his good one), and both starts played OVER the totals.

Down at Triple-A Memphis this year Cooney is 6-4/2.74, allowing just 61 hits through 89 innings.

Game 2 Batting Splits
St. Louis came into today as one of the best lineups in baseball against right-handed pitching, ranking fourth in the Majors in batting average at .269 and third in team on-base percentage at .330.

Chicago, meanwhile, ranked 10th against lefties with a .258 batting average and third in OBP at .342.

Game 2 Free Picks
We'll give Cooney the edge in the pitching match-up, and in this spot that's good enough for us. Also, we respect both bullpens, despite what happened in Game 1, so we're thinking UNDER.

MLB Picks: St. Louis -106 at Heritage and UNDER seven runs (-115) at JustBet
