A huge series opens today in Pittsburgh where the Pirates and Cardinals are both desperate for a win. Join us for a free MLB pick in a game that could be interrupted by rain.

Season: 62-62-3 (+2.09)

This weekend’s long series in Pittsburgh between the Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals would stand out a little more if both teams weren’t caught up in losing skids. Then again, that might make the four games even more crucial as they prepare for a 7:05 PM (ET) first pitch on Thursday with Adam Wainwright (12-5, 4.87) and Jameson Taillon (7-5, 4.50) on the bump. 5Dimes has Pittsburgh installed as -135 chalk with 8½ for the total.

St. Louis saw its 8-game win streak come to an abrupt end this week, and the Cardinals arrive in Pittsburgh on a 3-game skid. The Pirates return home after dropping the final four on a 2-5 road trip, and they’ve fallen 8 games off the pace for the NL’s second wild card.

Pirates 4-5 When Taillon Tosses Along Banks Of Allegheny

It hasn’t always been pretty on Wainwright’s part, but the Cardinals have won six of his last seven starts, and both games since he came off a short DL stint. He suffered a little soreness in his right arm the last time out, but hung around long to grab the dubya as -160 home chalk on the MLB odds against the Braves. Wainwright pitched well vs. the Bucs in June (7 IP, 1 ER), but walked away with a no-decision in a 4-3 Pirates upset. PNC has not been his favorite place to pitch the past six years, Wainwright 1-3 with a 4.78 ERA his last six appearances.

Taillon had a couple of very ugly starts to close July and open August, but has rebounded to help the Pirates to a pair of wins his last two outings. Pittsburgh has split his two assignments vs. the Redbirds this season, winning 4-3 in Arch City and falling 4-0 in Iron City. Matt Carpenter and Tommy Pham have been his toughest two outs in the St. Louis lineup during Taillon’s short career, the pair combining for seven hits in 16 at bats (.437).

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

This is the first of two games in this set we’ll include with our free baseball picks, the other being the Sunday Night Baseball matchup. St. Louis has ruled this rivalry the last 15 years or so by winning at nearly a .600 clip, and the Cardinals have made themselves right at home in Pittsburgh since PNC Park opened in 2001 (78-62). The Pirates did, however, take 2-of-3 here when the clubs met right after the All-Star Game with the Cards winning 4-of-6 before the break in St. Louis. All three of the July matchups on this diamond fell short of the totals.

We’re looking at a 40%-70% chance of rain this afternoon and evening in Pittsburgh, and that could make for short outings by the starters depending when it comes. The total shows signs of climbing to 9, and I like the ‘under’ regardless where it closes.
