Battle of Missouri
The Cardinals will entertain the Royals tonight at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri with the first pitch slated for 8:10 PM ET. According to MLB odds the Cardinals are a -150 money line home favorite and the posted total is 7.5. Both of these teams come off a shutout loss on Sunday. The Cardinals were a 8-0 home loser to the Giants, and the Royals went down 4-0 at Toronto. The Cardinals have won 7 of the 10 meetings between these in state rivals.
The Cardinals will send right-hander Shelby Miller to the hill tonight. The talented youngster with a huge upside has had a up and down start to the season thus far. Miller has gone 6-5 in his team starts with a decent 3.94 ERA. He's been a bit shaky over his last 3 starts as evidenced by his lofty 5.82 ERA in those outings.
The Royals will go with southpaw Daniel Duffy on the mound this evening. Duffy has worked as both a starter and reliever this year for the Royals. He's gone just 1-4 in his 5 team starts, and has walked 1 more than he struck out in those outings. Duffy has displayed some erratic form over his last 3 starts in posting a lofty 5.29 ERA in those outings.
Cardinals are Reeling a Bit
St. Louis enters tonight having most recently lost 3 of 4 at home to the Giants. The San Francisco pitching was dominant in the series, limiting an explosive Cardinals offense to a combined 22-hits during the 4-games. On a positive note, the Cardinals have gone a terrific 14-1 at home over the last 3 seasons after losing 5 or 6 of their previous 7-games. They've also gone a terrific 19-2 at home during the last 3 seasons, after having a team on-base-percentage of .285 or less over the last 5-games. The Cardinals are 30-27 on the year, good for 2nd in the NL Central, and 4.0 games behind the 1st place Milwaukee Brewers.
A Royal Disappointment
The Kansas City Royals entered the season with high expectations. They were widely regarded as one the more talented young teams in the American League, and seemed to be on the cusp of becoming a legitimate playoff contender. They still very well may be, but their current 26-30 record finds them last in the AL Central. On a positive note, there's still 106-games to play in the regular season, and they're just 6.5 games out of first place.
You can make the case that the Cardinals Shelby Miller has underperformed a bit this season. On the other side of the ledger, the Royals starter Daniel Duffy is a spot starter at best, and has been for his entire MLB career to this point. The Cardinals will welcome having to face anyone but the Giants pitching staff right now. I have a very small lean to the home side.
