Nationals in the Desert to face the Diamondbacks
Arizona will open a three game series at home on Monday versus Washington at 9:40 PM ET. According to the MLB betting odds at Wagerweb, Washington is a -155 money line favorite, and the posted total is 8.0. This will be the first meeting of the season between these National League clubs. Washington dominated Arizona a season ago by winning six of those seven encounters.
The Nationals Max Scherzer will make his seventh start of the season tonight. He’s gone 3-3 in his first six team starts with an exceptional 2.11 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and has just shy of an excellent 10:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Scherzer has allowed just 2 homers in 42 2/3 innings pitched this season. This will be just his second career start versus Arizona, and the first was irrelevant since it came during the 2010 season.
Arizona will send right-hander Josh Collmenter to the mound for this series opener. Collmenter has posted very respectable numbers in six starts with a 3.40 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and a 7:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Arizona has gone 3-3 in those six games, and five of the six went over the total with Collmenter as their starter. The Diamondbacks hurler made one start versus Washington in 2014, and that came at home during a 6-5 loss. In that outing, he allowed four earned runs in 5.0 innings.
After a slow start to the season, the Washington Nationals are beginning to resemble the National League favorite many of the experts expected them to be. The Nationals have won four in a row, and are 10-2 in their last twelve games. They’ve also gone 4-0 over the total in their last four and 10-4 over during the previous fourteen games.
I projected the Diamondbacks to be mediocre at best this season, and thus far they’ve made me look prophetic. Arizona is 14-16 in 2015, and that includes 8-10 at home. They enter this series with Washington having gone 4-2 in their previous six games. Tonight will be the fifth of a seven game in seven day home stand for Arizona, and their coming off a 2-2 split versus San Diego.
Washington is hitting a robust .302 as a team, and averaging a lofty 5.2 runs per game during their previous seven. The Arizona Diamondbacks have also been swinging some hot bats, hitting .291 as a team, and averaging a robust 5.7 runs per game during their last seven. Despite both of these starting pitchers displaying good form in 2015, I’m leaning toward a wager on the over as one of my MLB picks for Monday.
MLB Pick: Play on Washington and Arizona to go Over the total of 8.0 at Wagerweb.
