Capper Siding With Yankees To Split Series Against Rangers

Three of the 10 games on Thursday's baseball betting card are afternoon affairs, starting with the series finale in New York between the Yankees and Texas Rangers.

Texas Rangers vs. N.Y. Yankees
Everything pointed to another Texas Rangers victory Wednesday night in New York. The best team in the American League had a 7-3 lead entering the bottom of the ninth and appeared headed towards its sixth consecutive win over the Yankees on their home field.

It wasn't to be, however, as New York got big homers from Brian McCann and Didi Gregorious to stave off defeat and rally for a 9-7 triumph. Instead of the Rangers playing for a 4-game series sweep this afternoon, the Yankees are now playing for a split in the long set.

First pitch at the House That George Built is 1:05 PM (ET), the MLB Network providing coverage of the first of three matinees on Thursday's baseball betting card. AJ Griffin and Michael Pineda will be dueling on the mound, with New York drawing the role of favorite on a morning Moneyline around -130 on most MLB odds. With two of the first three games in the set turning into high-scoring affairs thanks to late-inning eruptions, a 9 run total is also being offered, Pinnacle slightly favoring the 'over.'

New York's big ninth inning saved its backers from eating a lot of chalk, Game 3 closing with Masahiro Tanaka and the Yanks laying -195 at Bookmaker. Wednesday's 'over' winner left totals split in the six games played between the clubs this year, four of the last six on this field skipping past the numbers.

Pineda Enjoying Bounce-Back June
Griffin beat the Yankees about two months ago in Texas, registering his best start of the season with eight innings of 1-run, 4-hit baseball in a 10-1 Rangers rout. That victory pushed his career record vs. New York to 3-0 in four career starts, fashioning a 2.48 ERA. Two of the outings came in the Bronx, one of them a bit ugly while he was with the Athletics though he did escape with a no-decision.

The biggest issue for the former San Diego Toreros standout has been his health, Griffin missing just about all of the 2014-15 seasons, first with Tommy John surgery and then going under the knife for his right shoulder. He even missed about a month and a half this year with a sore shoulder, and that has led Texas manager Jeff Banister to go easy on Griffin when he has been able to pitch.

Pineda suffered through a pretty rough April and downright ugly May but has been solid through his first five starts of June. Four of his assignments this month have gone into the books as wins for New York after the club dropped seven of his first 10 starts.  He's been missing a lot of bats in June, striking out 37 in 30 innings against just five walks, and allowed only three home runs after serving up 11 in the first two months. Pineda missed facing the Rangers in Texas back in April and lost his only start against the Rangers since joining the Yankees in 2013.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
Alan Porter is set to call balls and strikes to finish off one complete lap through the umpire crew in the series. He started the year in Jeff Kellogg's crew before becoming a member of this makeshift staff and has rewarded 'over' bettors 10 of his 15 plate assignments, including a high-side winner in a Yankees-Red Sox affair at Fenway on May 1. Porter hasn't made many friends with Yankees fans recently, the visitors winning his last four dish appearances in the Bronx with the totals splitting in those contests.

The weatherman has a near-perfect forecast for the matchup, temps in the low-to-mid 80s for the afternoon, sunny skies and a light SW breeze (out to left). I'm hopeful last night's comeback fuels New York today, and will make my free MLB pick on the series being halved.
