The reeling Rangers managed a 4-2 victory in Game 1 of this series Monday night, thanks in part to five New York errors. We'll try for better luck with our free MLB pick on Tuesday's Game 2 (7:05 pm ET).

Tuesday's Betting Odds
Many shops opened New York and Chase Whitley at around -165 over Texas with Nick Martinez, then, just like yesterday, had to bump the Yanks 10-15 cents, to the -175-80 range. And the total was proffered at nine runs.

The Yanks can also be gotten at around +115 on the run line.

Monday Re-Hash
New York led 2-1 going into the sixth but Texas scored three times with two outs, and held on from there for a 4-2 victory. The Rangers won as +140 dogs on Monday's MLB betting board, and the game stayed 'under' its total of 8.5 runs.

We backed New York on the run line for our free MLB pick on Monday's contest, at a price of +120.

But the Yanks managed just five hits – the same amount of errors they committed.

But while we lost our pick, we saved ourselves 50 bucks by eschewing the money line.

Yankee Mark Teixeira, who leads the team with 17 homers and 48 RBI, was a late scratch from Monday's game, hobbled by a sore back; he will probably miss the rest of this series.

Tuesday's Twirlers
Whitley (4-3, 5.10) is just 2/11 on quality starts this season, and 0 for his last five. Last time out, nine days ago against Baltimore, Whitley gave up three runs in three-plus innings, and over his last four starts he's been tagged for 20 ER in just 14 innings.

For the season Whitley has allowed 69 hits in 55 innings, walked 12 and struck out 40. New York is 7-4 in Whitley's starts, with the totals leaning toward the 'overs' by a 7-4 margin.

This will be Whitley's first-ever start against the Rangers.

Martinez (1-6, 5.10) is 3/11 on quality starts this year, but 0 for his last two. Back on June 26 he gave up four runs in less than three innings against Detroit, and just after that he got bombed for six ER and three home runs in five innings against Baltimore. For the last three weeks he's been on the DL after experiencing soreness on his side.

On the season Martinez has allowed 82 hits, including 12 dingers, in 67 innings, and he's walked more guys, 31, than he's struck out, 29. Texas is 4-7 in games Martinez has started, with the totals leaning 'over' 7-4.

Martinez has never started against the Yankees.

Free Pick for Tuesday
Neither starting pitcher has done a whole lot to inspire any confidence, but neither has faced tonight's foe. In our book that gives them a bit of an advantage, at least for the first couple of times through the lineup. So we'll go with the 'under' nine runs, at the -115 offered at Heritage, for our free MLB pick on Tuesday's contest.
