Our MLB handicapper breaks down Monday’s lone early game between the Dodgers and Pirates. Go inside to read this extremely insightful article which concludes with a MLB pick.

The Dodgers and Pirates will complete a four game series on Monday at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The opening pitch is slated for 12:35 PM ET. Current MLB Odds at Heritage has Los Angeles as a -109 money line favorite and the posted total is 8.

Pirates Domination of Dodgers
The Pirates have taken the first three games of this series, and beating today’s opponent has become common place in recent years. As a matter of fact, since 2014, Pittsburgh has gone 13-3 against the Dodgers, and that includes 8-1 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Those encounters also resulted in games going 10-6 over the total, and 6-3 over at PNC Park.

Scheduling Quirk
Both clubhouses are sure to be a bit lethargic today, and certainly not happy with the schedule makers. After all, they played in the ESPN national telecast last night, and that game ended at 10:45 PM ET. I don’t think it would be going out on a limb to say that this is a rare scheduling occurrence.

You would be hard pressed to recall the last time two teams played on the ESPN Sunday night game, and then were scheduled for a Monday early matinee. It wouldn’t shock me in the least if this was a first. Today will be especially tough on a west coast team such as Los Angeles, who in essence is looking at a 9:35 AM Pacific Time start.

Make no mistake, there’s a huge difference between playing a doubleheader, compared to the physical and mental toll this highly unusual itinerary takes on players.

Starting Pitchers
The Dodgers Scott Kazmir has displayed shaky form over his last four starts. During that span, Kazmir has posted a 4.90 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and three of those four games went over the total. The veteran southpaw hurler has seen all three of his starts during day games go over the total in 2016. He was a major contributor to those high scoring affairs by compiling a 7.71 ERA.

Francisco Liriano makes the start for Pittsburgh in this early matinee. Liriano has gone a dismal 0-5 in his last five team starts with a sizable 6.92 ERA and terrible 1.96 WHIP. Similar to his pitching adversary today, Liriano has struggled in day games this season, compiling an uninspiring 6.67 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, and allowed 8 home runs in only 20 1/3 innings during five outings.

Final Take and Pick
Pittsburgh has gone 26-14 (65%) over the total this year at PNC Park. Taking that trend one step further, if the total was 8.0 or 8.5 it improved to 13-5 (72.2%) over. Neither of these starting pitchers have been sharp whatsoever over the past few weeks. I’m going to have a small lean toward this being a high scoring game, and one of my free MLB Picks at Sportsbook Review will validate that notion.
