We’re going to look at tonight’s MLB inter-league game between the Red Sox and Cardinals. Read this revealing MLB betting article, and find out why we’ll be wagering on the total in this game.

World Series Rematch at Busch
The Cardinals host the Red Sox at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled at 8:15 PM ET. According to MLB betting odds the Cardinals are a -160 money line home favorite and the total is 8.0. This is a rematch of the 2013 World Series that won one by the Red Sox.

Starting Pitchers
Joe Kelly will get his first start in a Red Sox uniform tonight. Ironically it will come against the team (St. Louis) that just traded him away last week. The 26-year old right-hander struggled in his last 4-starts before the trade. He posted a large 7.32 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in those outings, and 3 of the 4 went over the total. In 5-starts on the road this season he’s posted a sizable 6.55 ERA and 1.82 WHIP. Kelly has gone 17-14 in his MLB career with a 3.25 ERA. All of those starts came as a member of the Cardinals.

The Cardinals will counter with 23-year old right-hander Shelby Miller. The St. Louis hurler has had a tough go of it over his last 6-starts posting a terrible 6.07 ERA in those appearances, and 5 of those 6 went over the total. Miller has gone a subpar 4-6 against the money at home this season. This has been a disappointing year for Miller who comes off a 15-9 campaign in 2013 while posting a stellar 3.06 ERA in doing so.

Nightmare of a Season for the Red Sox
The Red Sox entered the 2014 season with extreme optimism after capturing the World Series crown in 2013. Unfortunately, the season has regressed into a major disappointment. The icing on the cake came last week when they threw in the proverbial towel. They traded away their two top starting pitchers Jon Lester and John Lackey. Boston has gone a dismal 2-10 in their last 12-games, and is buried in the basement of the AL East 14.0 games behind the Baltimore Orioles.

In the Thick of Things Again
The Cardinals always seem to be eyeing a playoff spot, or a division title, at this time of the season over the last decade. Well this year has been no different as they find themselves 2nd in the NL Central just 1.0-game behind the Milwaukee Brewers. The only difference now compared to recent seasons is they’re going to have to do it without their unquestioned leader on the field catcher Yadier Molina. The Cardinals veteran may be able to possibly return from the DL near the end of the regular season, or for the playoffs if the Cardinals qualify.

Final Analysis
I’m not crazy about either of these starting pitchers current form. The Red Sox have seen just 4 of their last 14-games go under the total when facing an opponent with a winning record. The Cardinals have gone over the total in 7 of their last 10 versus an opponent with a losing record. I look for this one to be a high scoring affair.
