Our MLB handicapping professional previews Sunday night’s nationally televised game between the Dodgers and Cardinals. Read on to get his expert MLB pick.

Dodgers (Kazmir) vs Cardinals (Mayers)
The Dodgers and Cardinals will conclude their three-game weekend series on Sunday night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Current lines at Heritage has the Dodgers as a -139 money line favorite on their MLB Odds, and the posted total is 9.0.

These clubs split the first two games with the Cardinals winning a 4-3 extra inning affair on Friday, and the Dodgers coming out on top yesterday by a score of 7-2. It’s worth noting, there’s been ten games played at Busch Stadium since 2014 between these teams, and eight of those stayed under the total. They’ve also played one another 23 times overall in that same time period, and sixteen of those results went under the total.

Starting Pitchers
The Dodgers will go with veteran southpaw Scott Kazmir on the mound tonight. Kazmir has exhibited superb form over his last three starts, compiling a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP during the course of that time. Kazmir has faced St. Louis once this year, and he turned in a terrific performance. He came within one out of a complete game on that day, allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 7 and walking only 1.

Mike Mayers will make his first career MLB start tonight. Mayers was the Cardinals 3rd round draft choice out of Ole Miss in 2013. The young left-hander has certainly earned his recent promotion to the big leagues. He’s gone a combined 8-5 with a 2.62 ERA at AA Springfield and AAA Memphis this year. His 2.92 ERA in 9 starts with Memphis in the Pacific Coast League was especially inspiring, considering the majority of ballparks in that circuit are of a hitter friendly variety.

Final Take and Pick
Neither one of these teams has been imposing over each of their preceding seven games. The Cardinals have an insipid .292 OBP through that time span, and the Dodgers aren’t much better with a .308 OBP through that seven-game period. Considering there’s a large total by National League standards, I like this game to play below the number for one of my Sunday MLB picks.
