The Starting Pitchers
The Astros will go with right-hander Brad Peacock on the mound this evening. Peacock has pitched very well on the road in limited starts season despite going 1-3 against the money. In those 4-outings the Astros hurler has compiled a very good 3.08 ERA, and he’s seen 3 of those 4 stay under the total. All of Peacock’s career starts versus Oakland have come since 2013, and he’s gone 1-4 against the money line with a decent at best 4.21 ERA.

Oakland will counter with the youngster Jesse Chavez on the hill. The A’s right-hander has had a pretty good year thus far going 13-6 against the money line, and with a very good 3.14 ERA. He’s been especially good at home going 6-2 against the money line, with a stellar 2.13 ERA. The bad news is that he’s shown some shaky form over his last 4-starts in posting a lofty 4.98 ERA, and a 1.80 WHIP.

Better but not Good
The Houston Astros has certainly shown a marked improvement from the club that went 51-111 (.315) a season ago, and was by far the worst team in all of baseball. Unfortunately even with some positive strides, their current record of 42-58 (.420) is hardly worth bragging about. The Astros do enter tonight with a modest 2-game win streak, and have defeated Oakland in their last 3-meetings this season. If you’ve wagered against the Astros in the month of July over the last 3-seasons, then you made quite a bit of money, especially considering they’ve gone a horrendous 15-51 against the money line during that time. Houston has also gone a dismal 3-13 this season following a win by 2-runs or less, and was outscored by an average of 2.8 runs per contest.

Dominant at Home
Despite their loss last night, Oakland has gone a superb 32-17 on their home field this season, including an outstanding 26-8 in their last 34 in that role. The A’s have also gone an extremely profitable 22-4 against the money line over the last 3-years after losing to an opponent 3 consecutive time in the same season. The A’s haven’t exactly torn the cover off the ball in their last 10-games hitting a mild .237 as a team. However, MLB bettors should note that they’ve gone a terrific 17-5 against the money line this season after hitting .240 or less over their last 10-games, and had a huge +2.7 run per game differential in those contests. They should be able to make contact and hold their narrow lead in the American League West over the LA Angels.
