Consider this when looking over the MLB betting odds for tonight's Giants vs. Pirates NL Wild Card match: whoever wins earns the right to face the Washington Nationals in the National League Division Series

Battle Tested
The San Francisco Giants won six elimination games en route to capturing the 2012 World Series and welcome back many of their key contributors during that period of time, including star Buster Posey, who led the league with a .413 batting average and .690 slugging since Aug. 21 during the regular season.

It’s important to point out that the franchise went 12-11 on the road with a money line of -100 to -125 in 2014, with the 'under' going 11-10-2 in that situation.

There’s No Place Like Home
Pittsburgh established a new franchise record by winning 51 games at PNC Park this season, which can’t be ignored when making pro baseball picks, as the Los Angeles Angels were the only team in the Majors with a better home record.

The Pirates are led offensively by 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen, who finished second in the Senior Circuit in total bases, while finishing tied for third in the league in the number of hits he collected in September.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the club has produced a 107-115 record against teams with a winning record.

Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner (18-10, 2.98 ERA) was handed a 4-2 road defeat by the Los Angeles Dodgers in his last regular season outing—surrendering four runs and six hits over 7.1 innings of work.

The left-hander went 11-4 with a 2.22 ERA in 18 trips to the mound away from AT&T Park, as he issued just 19 walks and struck out 118 batters in 125.2 combined frames.

Bumgarner has compiled a 1-3 record and 3.24 ERA in four lifetime efforts as a member of the Giants versus the Pirates.

Pirates starting pitcher Edinson Volquez (13-7, 3.04 ERA) produced a 5-0 record and 1.64 ERA in his final 11 appearances heading into postseason play, as he looks to build off a 10-1 road victory over the Atlanta Braves last Thursday.

The right-hander is 8-5 with a 3.06 ERA in 18 home games (17 starts), with opposing hitters batting .225 against him (.248 on the road).

In 11 lifetime outings against the Giants, Volquez has gone 2-2 with a 5.72 ERA, including a 8.55 ERA in four outings at his home ballpark.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Giants as one of their MLB picks, as they’ve won 15 of Bumgarner’s last 20 road starts, while the Pirates are 3-8 in their last 11 games versus a starting pitcher with a WHIP less than 1.15.
