Brewers vs Padres Picks May 15th: Solid Pitching Should Lead to a Low Total

Brewers pitcher Chase Anderson

One of the more surprising teams in major league baseball in the season has been the Milwaukee Brewers. Today they take on the Padres in San Diego and we’re going to look at the total for this matchup. Can Chase Anderson and Luis Perdomo keep the run totals to a minimum?

Milwaukee Brewers

Chase Anderson takes the mound for Milwaukee and comes in with a 2.97 ERA and 1.32 whip so far on the season. Probably the most impressive statistic of his seven starts this season is that he has allowed just two home runs total going a stretch of five games without allowing any. Recently he has been knocked around just a little bit his last three starts but I don’t expect him to have that much trouble today against a light-hitting San Diego team.

At the plate, Milwaukee has been very good in getting runs across the plate averaging 5.19 per game which ranks third in major league baseball. They also have been good in the power categories ranking second in slugging and third in OPS. However, they do strikeout at an alarming rate averaging 9.29 per game which ranks them second to last in all of baseball. Although I do expect them to push a couple runs across today I think combined with San Diego they will have trouble getting over this total.

San Diego Padres

Luis Perdomo gets the start for San Diego and comes in with a 4.13 ERA and 1.38 whip which are both well above his career 5.45 ERA and 1.55 whip. Since his first start back in early April Perdomo has been solid allowing a total of just eight earned runs over his last four starts spanning 23 innings and allowing zero home runs in that span as well.

San Diego has really struggled this season as per their norm over the past several years as they rank 27th in the league in runs scored per game and are hitting just .222 as a team which ranks them second to last in the major leagues. From there OPS to strikeouts per game the Padres rank in the bottom five in pretty much every offensive category and I don’t see them breaking out today. Of course playing at Petco Park is not going to be conducive to a lot of runs and I think that’ll be exactly the case today when these two teams meet up.

Milwaukee Brewers vs San Diego Padres

Oddsmakers have come out setting this total at 7.5 and for my MLB pick, I will back under the total. Both these pitchers have been solid this year and both of these teams have shown a propensity to strikeout a lot. As well, with this game being played in one of the least friendly hitter’s park, I have a hard time believing they’re going to get over this total.
