The Milwaukee Brewers have three weeks to make up three games in the NL Wild Card chase, and the MLB odds favor them tonight in the series opener vs. Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh vs. Milwaukee

Sweeping the Cubs at Wrigley should have the Milwaukee Brewers feeling really good about themselves as they come home to begin a very short homestand. Trouble is that broom job came after being swept in Cincinnati, and times are becoming a bit desperate for the Brew Crew as they aim for a National League playoff slot.

Adding a bit of mystery to the mix this evening is the opener of their 3-game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates finds a couple of rookie hurlers facing off for the first time in this rivalry. Milwaukee sends Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 1.52) to the bump as the favorite for the 7:40 PM (ET), Heritage pricing the Brewers -160 on the money line. Pittsburgh counters with Steven Brault (0-0, 5.79) and 9 is the scoreboard target for bettors.

Brewers Not Giving Woodruff A Lot Of Run Support
Called up in late July to work in long relief out of the Pittsburgh bullpen, Brault became the first southpaw to start for the Pirates last Tuesday when he went five innings against the Cubs. The 25 year old surrendered three runs and failed to strike anyone out, the Pittsburgh hitters taking him off the hook for the loss with a couple of 8th-inning runs to beat Chicago. Brault has been charged with nine runs (6 earned) in seven innings away from home this season.

Woodruff hung around for three starts in early August before a quick trip back to the minors. He was recalled when rosters expanded on September 1, and promptly tossed a gem the next day against the Nationals who Woodruff held to two hits and a run in seven innings. The bullpen coughed up the slim 2-1 lead, however, costing the former Mississippi State star his second big league victory. He has allowed just three runs and five hits in nearly 13 innings over two starts at Miller Park.

Rivalry Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
The Brewers have not been very gracious hosts when the Pirates come calling at Miller Park, winning 93 of the 142 contests (.654) played on this field since it opened in 2001, and 4-of-6 this season. Betting the ‘under’ has been the way to play the MLB odds when these two get together the past couple of years, totals going 3-12-1 dating to the beginning of 2016.

Clear skies and temps in the upper-60s are forecasted tonight in BNeer City, but we expect the lid to be shut at Miller Park. One way to play this game might be to go with the ‘under’ for the first five innings as both lineups get their first looks at the starting pitchers. I’m going a different way with my free baseball pick, however, and back Milwaukee on the run line.

My Free Pick: Brewers -1½ (+130) at 5Dimes
