Can Milwaukee get some help to sneak into the NL playoffs? The Brewers need to take care of their own business first, and we have a free MLB pick for their Monday matchup in Pittsburgh.

Season: 75-80-4 (-1.40)

Brew Crew vs. Buccos

No matter how well the Milwaukee Brewers play these final two weeks, they’re going to need some help if the National League playoffs are in their future. At least with Monday’s light schedule, Craig Counsel’s crew can forget about scoreboard watching tonight and focus their entire attention on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Milwaukee sends swingman Brent Suter (2-2, 3.66) to the bump at PNC Park, the Pirates countering with Jameson Taillon (7-6, 4.78) in the 7:05 PM (ET) start, and the Brewers are slight favorites at Bookmaker with 8½ for the total.

Milwaukee trails Colorado by 2½ games for the second NL Wild Card spot, and the Brewers have won three consecutive series, sweeping the Cubs at Wrigley, taking 2-of-3 from these Pirates last week at Miller Park, and then 2-of-3 at home as the visitors against the Marlins who were in Milwaukee due to Hurricane Irma. Pittsburgh has been in a tailspin since winning four in a row earlier this month, the Pirates currently in a 5-game skid and 1-10 their last 11.

Look For Milwaukee Bullpen To Be Called On Early
Suter started last Tuesday’s home win over the Pirates, but didn’t figure into the decision with just three innings of work and Pittsburgh scoring both of its runs in the 5-2 final. He also failed to go the required five here at PNC back in July, running into trouble in the fifth of the Bucs’ eventual 4-2 victory. We don’t expect the Harvard grad to go more than 60-70 tosses tonight.

Taillon will be making his fourth consecutive start against an NL Central foe, pitching well in back-to-back outings against the Reds before getting knocked around in Pittsburgh last week by the Cubs who were -135 chalk on the MLB odds. The Pirates have split his 22 assignments this season, one of the wins coming against the Brewers in a July home series. This will be his 25th career start at PNC, the former No. 2 overall pick (2010) 5-6 in the previous 24 with a 4.14 ERA.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
This rivalry has generally gone to the home team, Milwaukee owning the Pirates at Miller Park with Pittsburgh up 82-61 at PNC Park. The Pirates have won six of the seven played here this year, and are up 9-7 in the season series with the ‘under’ cashing 6-of-7 times in Pittsburgh.

A few clouds and muggy temps in the mid-to-upper 70s is the forecast tonight in Iron City, along with just the slightest of a breeze from the ESE (in from center). Let’s follow the season trend with a free baseball pick on the ‘under.’

My MLB pick: Brewers-Pirates Under 8½

Best Lines (+100) at the Greek
