Houston is chasing home-field advantage in the AL playoffs while Boston chases a division title, and we have a free baseball pick for their series opener tonight at Fenway Park.

Sure hope you’re a fan of matchups involving the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, because there’s a really good chance they’ll be a primary focal point of the schedule the next couple of weeks. The clubs could be paired up to begin the postseason after closing the regular season this weekend in Boston, Thursday’s series opener pitting Brad Peacock (12-2, 2.98) against Eduardo Rodriguez (6-6, 3.91) in a pick ‘em at Bookmaker where the total is 9.

Houston sits a game behind Cleveland for the best record in the AL, the Indians finishing up a set with the Twins this afternoon before hosting the White Sox over the weekend. Boston, meanwhile, has a 3-game lead over the Yankees in the East Division and needs two wins, two New York losses, or a combination of both to claim the title.

Sox 8-2 When Rodriguez Hurls At Fenway

There are a bunch of reasons why Houston is enjoying one of its finest seasons ever, and one that gets overlooked is the job Peacock has turned in. After beginning the season as the long man in AJ Hinch’s bullpen, the 29-year-old moved into the rotation when Dallas Keuchel was injured in May, and the Astros have won 14 of his 20 starts since, eight of his 11 road assignments. Peacock missed the Sox when they came to Houston in June, and this is his first start at Fenway since 2014 when Boston bashed him pretty good (4.1 IP, 5 ER).

Playing Rodriguez and the ‘under’ on the MLB odds have been good wagers this month, Boston 3-1 in the lefthander’s assignments and ‘under’ bettors also cashing three times. The Venezuelan has had trouble sticking around more than five innings in his home starts, but it has been a profitable bottom line with the Red Sox winning eight of his 10 Fenway outings. Rodriguez has faced Houston just once before, a 5-inning start during his 2015 rookie campaign that went into Boston’s win column.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

The Fens has been an inhospitable stop for the Astros, Boston winning 14 of the 18 games played on their fabled home diamond. The Red Sox have won 11 of the 15 here since the Astros arrived in the AL, and took 2-of-3 in H-Town a little more than three months ago. All four Boston encounters a year ago went ‘over,’ the Red Sox outscoring Houston 33-22.

Clear skies and temps in the low-60s made brisker by a 10-14 mph NNW breeze blowing over the Monster towards the right field corner make the forecast. Put me down for a free baseball pick on the home team to make a Boston-Houston ALDS even more likely tonight.
