A rematch of the 2013 World Series is on tap Tuesday in St. Louis, and we have a free baseball pick for the battle between the Cardinals and Boston Red Sox.

MLB Season Record: 14-26 (-13.87)

Interleague play celebrates its official 20th birthday in a few weeks, so it remains a youngster in the grand scheme of baseball history. Among the rarest regular-season matchups so far has been the Red Sox against the Cardinals, and those two will play for the lucky 13th time starting Tuesday when Boston visits St. Louis for the start of a quick 2-game set.

MLB Network has the first pitch at 8:15 PM (ET), Eduardo Rodriguez and Lance Lynn the initial duel on the hill. 5Dimes has the Cardinals -107 on their morning nickel line with 8½ for the scoreboard hurdle.

John Farrell and the Red Sox arrive in the middle of the AL East pack, trailing the Yankees by 4 games and having dropped four of their last six. St. Louis has won 9 of 11 to turn around a horrible first two weeks of the 2017 fixture. About the only thing they’ve had in common recently has been a penchant to helping bettors playing the ‘over’ on MLB betting boards, 15 of their last 20 combined going past the marks.

Cards Cash Last 5 Lynn Assignments

We saw Rodriguez last week when he had a solid effort only to no-decision in Boston’s 4-1 win at Milwaukee. The southpaw has been in control with just three walks and 20 Ks his last 18 innings, posting quality starts the last four times out. Tonight will be his career cherry against the Cardinals, nobody in their lineup having faced him outside of spring training.

Lynn had his shortest outing of the year this past Wednesday in Miami, making it just through the fourth on 104 tosses while walking four and allowing a pair of first-inning bombs that essentially sealed his fate. Fortunately, the Cardinals rallied to win it, and Lynn did settle down after that first frame. He’s faced the Red Sox just once in the regular season, a no-decision that he pitched well in 2014, and twice in the 2013 World Series. One of those was a start in Game 4, Boston enjoying a big sixth off the righty to win.

Series Info, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Once they’re through with this short set plus a follow-up miniseries at Fenway in August, the Sox and Cards still will have played each other eight more times in the World Series than the regular season. St. Louis took the ’46 and ’67 Fall Classics, each time in seven games, with Boston sweeping the Cardinals in 2004 to break their long title drought and winning four games to two in 2013. They last met here at Busch in 2014, the Redbirds taking two of three and all three games going ‘under’ totals in the 7½-8 range.

Mid-80s and a bit humid is the forecast for game time, along with a decent little southerly breeze (out to left) that could gust to 20 mph. I like the visitors for my free baseball pick.
