Placing MLB picks on a 'Berd' (Better Record Dog) at a huge underdog price is the way to go in the Toronto Blue Jays (Buehrle) vs. Chicago White Sox (Sale) battle of this dichotomous pitching styles.

Toronto Blue Jays (Buehrle) vs. Chicago White Sox (Sale) 8:10 ET
Toronto Blue Jays visit the Chicago White sox for this 8:10 ET start.  It is the first game of an early week set.  The Blue Jays salvaged their weekend with a 10-5 victory at Detroit against a fading Verlander as commanded by SBR forum posters.  The White Sox finally ran out of magic, getting thumped by Baltimore 9-1 on this field yesterday.  In a matchup of teacher vs. student, we will take the veteran mentor, Buehrle and the Toronto Blue Jays as BERD (Better Record Dog) against the red-hot, but overpriced Chris Sale and CWS.

At 36-43, CWS has a better record than only Oakland in the AL.  This is an amazing league which finds all 15 teams playing .447 to .582 baseball.  But, the White Sox numbers imply a fall from grace is imminent.  Without the numbers of tonight’s starter, Chris Sale, CWS would not approach their lowly rated pitching OPS number of .744.  And, it is hard to ignore the No. 30 rated .653 OPS, especially when compared to the No. 1 batting OPS of Toronto at .783.  There is little doubt that Sale is on a roll, as he faces off against his mentor, Mark Buehrle.  Sale has recorded 10+ Ks in 8 consecutive starts.  In the last 7 of those, he has a 1.56 ERA (yet only a 3-2 record).  For the season, Sale has a 2.87 ERA and a 0.95 HOME WHIP, a clear PLAY ON number.  But, it is not often that the student gets the better of the teacher.

Mark Buehrle spent 12 years leading the White Sox staff.  That includes pitching them to the pinnacle of baseball in 2005.  His recent run is among his best in the last several seasons.  In 6 recent starts, Buehrle is 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA.  Like his protégé, Buehrle works quickly.  So, playing the UNDER in projected game time is a reasonable assumption.  Unlike Sale, who is an overwhelming power pitcher, Buehrle is a finesse thrower who uses multiple off-speed pitches to keep hitters off-balance.  It has worked to perfection of late.  In a trio of outings since departing the west side of Chicago, Buehrle has a 3.20 ERA against his former team.

The pitching matchup could be a virtual standoff here tonight, leaving us with the biggest hitting edge in MLB on the side of the Toronto Blue Jays, as winning team in the role of BERD against a CWS team whose OPS numbers imply an imminent crash and burn which we cannot ignore when preparing our MLB picks.
