Yesterday the Padres claimed the first of a three-game set over the Nationals and broke out of a four-game slide. Let's review the MLB odds in this middle game and cash a ticket.

Swinger’s MLB Record: 56-24, +32.75 units
Our last foray into the volatile waters of sports gambling occurred on Wednesday when the Cubs breezed to an easy victory over the Mets and our two top totals did the splits. Thus, it was a 2-1 day and it was the first time in a good long time we have put a check mark in the loss column. It has been that kind of a season where a 2-1 day or 66 percent is actually below our season average.

Let's check out the MLB odds on this National League tilt and cash yet another ticket in our MLB picks for Saturday night's Padres vs Nationals game.

Journeyman Jackson Goes for Padres
Edwin Jackson (1-1, 4.76 ERA, 1.47 WHIP) was a man without a major league home for just about two weeks after the Marlins bid he and his 5.91 ERA ado. But it wasn't long before the Padres came knocking and signed him in mid-June. Jackson relies heavily on his fastball and hard slider. There is nothing much more to look for from opposing hitters and that has led to his status as a somewhat serviceable innings eater but far from a rock-solid starter. That being said, Jackson pitched a perfect six innings in his first start with his new team and took a no-no into the seventh but allowed a three-run bomb to effectively end his afternoon. Jackson wound up earning the decision in a 5-3 victory over the potent San Francisco Giants.

Jackson will hope to pry another offensive explosion out of veteran and former All-Star Matt Kemp. Yesterday the Padres shocked the Nats in their series opener by securing a 5-3 victory as +210 road dogs. San Diego was mired in a four-game tailspin before Friday's win but they still remain 15 ½ games behind the NL West-leading Giants.

Nats Send Max to the Hill
Max Scherzer will look to redeem his club after yesterday's surprising loss to the lackluster Padres. The perennial All-Star last took the mound on Sunday when he pitched another masterful game, allowing just one run on six hits in seven innings, against the Pirates. Unfortunately, for Scherzer and the Nationals, it was not enough to overcome their lineup's power outage as Washington fell 2-1. Scherzer is 2-2 when starting against the Padres with an ERA of 2.57 and a WHIP of 1.095.

Scherzer's only outing against the Padres in 2016 came on June 18th when he surrendered just one run on four hits through six innings. Much to his chagrin, his mates in the bullpen let him down as the Padres won the game 7-3.

Betting Analysis
The knee-jerk reaction when looking at these two pitchers and their respective clubs is to contemplate all of two seconds and check the little box next to the Washington Nationals. But successful handicapping is not that easy and laying the lumber time after time is a recipe for disaster. Just ask those who laid -240 with Washington yesterday and saw their bankroll thinned by the San Diego victory.

Jackson is accustomed to pitching at Nationals Park as he was a member of the Nats in 2012. He is 7-6 with a 3.26 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP in Washington and will make his 11th career appearance and third start against the Nationals tonight. In addition, Scherzer is just a .500 pitcher at home and in order to back Washington, the oddsmakers are making it downright painful as the current line is north of -300.

Washington owns a decent run scoring offense (10th) but their team batting average is ranked 19th in the major leagues with a less than impressive .249 average. While the Padres lineup is nothing to write home about they are still 16th in runs scored and could give the Nats a game here if Jackson performs as well as he did in his last appearance. Let's grab all that juice and look to make a score with a big dog here.
