The Giants and Cardinals get their NLCS underway this evening with the winner advancing to the 2014 World Series. Join us in reading our sports handicapping expert as he provides a MLB betting preview on tonight’s game complete with a moneyline free MLB pick.

NLCS Series Opener
The Cardinals will host the Giants in the opening game of the NLCS at Busch Stadium in St. Louis with the first pitch slated for 8:05 PM ET. According to MLB odds, the Cardinals are a -118 money line home favorite, and the posted total is 6.5. The weather should have little if any effect tonight. The Giants advanced to this point by defeating the Pirates in the NLCS, and then eliminating the Nationals in 4-games during the NLDS. The Cardinals won their NLDS in 4-games as well over the Los Angeles Dodgers, and did so by defeating the odds on favorite to win the 2014 NL Cy Young award Clayton Kershaw twice.

Premier Pitching Matchup for NLCS Opener
The Giants will send southpaw Madison Bumgarner to the mound tonight. Bumgarner has been terrific on the road this season for the Giants, going 13-5 against the money line, and posting a stellar 2.22 ERA in those 18-starts. Bumgarner pitched a complete game 4-hit shutout in an 8-0 rout at Pittsburgh during the 2014 NL Wild Card game.

The Cardinals will counter with the ace of their staff Adam Wainwright. The Cardinals hurler was a 20-game winner this season, in addition to going 23-9 against the money line with a superb 2.38 ERA. There’s a bit of concern regarding Wainwright entering tonight due to an elbow injury. All reports seem to indicate that if this were a regular season game, Wainwright would skip his turn in the rotation. Wainwright wasn’t sharp at all in his opening game start of the NLDS versus the Dodgers, allowing 6 earned runs on 11-hits, and all in just 4 1/3 innings of work.

Final Analysis
The Giants have been equally as good on the road, than they’ve been at home this season. It’s tough to fade Bumgarner on the road right now, and although I admire the courage that Wainwright is attempting to display by pitching through injury, I don’t believe he’s anywhere close to being 100%. For my MLB pick my lean here goes to the road underdog.
