How about getting your MLB wagering day off to a fast start? Take a look at this betting preview on the Rangers-Angels game Thursday afternoon and why Ross Benjamin likes the underdog Halos.

Texas Rangers At Los Angeles Angels

The Rangers and Angels will play their finale of a 3-game series Thursday afternoon. An opening pitch time of 3:37 PM ET is slated at the “Big A” in Anaheim. These AL West rivals have split the first 2 games of this series, with Los Angeles winning 6-5 on Tuesday and Texas coming out on top 8-3 on Wednesday. This series has been very evenly matched since 2016, proven by Texas going 11-10 during that time span.

 Starting Pitchers

Texas ace Yu Darvish will be making his 3rd start of the season. Darvish posted a 3.65 ERA and 1.30 WHIP during those first 2 outings. Darvish has pitched very well in day games throughout his MLB career. Furthermore, Darvish is a stellar 10-3 during 18 April starts since arriving on the MLB scene in 2012. The Texas hurler is 10-3 in his career against the Angels with a 3.78 ERA.

The Angels go with veteran Ricky Nolasco. He has collected a respectable 3.86 ERA and 1.20 WHIP during 2 starts in 2017. It’s worth noting that Nolasco has allowed 3 home runs in 11 2/3 innings thus far, and Texas has smashed 15 home runs in  its first 10 games.

The Rangers bullpen has struggled thus far, evidenced by compiling a substantial 6.83 ERA. Their weakness was exposed in the opening game of this series when Texas blew a 5-1 lead. Conversely, Los Angeles’ bullpen hasn’t encountered those types of lapses. The Angels' relievers have a solid 2.91 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 2017. They’ve also amassed 38 strikeouts and walked only 7 in 34.0 innings of work.

Final Take & Pick

Let me start by saying, I won’t be wagering on this game.

Darvish has made just 19 starts since the 2014 season ended. He missed the entirety of 2015 and made just 17 starts a season ago. He’s been very good but far from dominant over that course of time.

Conversely, I’m not a big fan of Nolasco, but if he can give his team 5 solid innings and then turn it over to an outstanding bullpen it will bode well for the home underdog. Additionally, it’s important to keep in mind that the Angels have already overcome 4-run and 7-run late-inning deficits for wins this year. With the current state of the Texas bullpen, no lead would seem insurmountable to overcome for the Halos. One of my free MLB picks on Thursday is on the home underdog Angels.
